Cover of the Week - Thunderbolts, X-Force, Runaways & Sinister Spider-Man

Pretty diverse line up of covers for each of our choices this week that even saw Eric joining us for a rare cover nomination. On tap are covers for Thunderbolts, Dark Reign: Sinister Spider-Man, Runaways and X-Force.  Hit the jump to for a look and to find out why each was chosen.

Kirk's Cover of the Week - Thunderbolts #136

Kirk: I was so pleased to see this cover on Thunderbolts at the shop after the confusion over the solicits and wondering if it was going to be a fill-in or not.  I've been reading Thunderbolts since Kurt Busiek and Mark Bagley first launched the title and seeing so many of the originals on this cover, and beautifully rendered to boot, got me pumped to get home and read this issue and that makes this my cover of the week.

Ryan's Cover of the Week - Runaways #14

Ryan: I love when the title of a book becomes part of the cover design itself, as it is almost always eye-catching and forces the artist to think creatively about character placement, scale, etc. I also really dig the way that David Lafuente plays with lighting on the cover, partially obscuring the character, so you almost second guess what you are seeing at first. It's the perfect cover for this issue.

Eric's Cover of the Week - Dark Reign: Sinister Spider-Man #4

Eric: AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. That's awesome. Anyway, I'm sucker for Chris Bachalo's artwork and that, combined with the hilarity of Venom eating New York City, makes me love this cover. The absurd proportions on Venom only serve to make it even better and I also love the white space background.

Matt's Cover of the Week - X-Force #19

Matt: Wow, that is one creepy cover image! Maybe it's just my natural fear of porcelain dolls, but this cover will haunt my dreams. So kudos to Mike Choi and Sonia Oback who rendered this piece wonderfully.

Runners-Up: Spider-Man: The Clone Saga #1, Unknown Soldier #12 & Last Days of Animal Man #5

Wow, I've never read much Thunderbolts, but that's a nice cover.

@Matt - Doesn't your wife collect porcelain dolls, or did I dream that? Haha that must suck for you if so.

@Primewax: No, thankfully, she doesn't do that. What she does have, however, is a creepy plastic mannequin head that she uses for hairstyling practice.

I don't think I can say anything nice about Runaways anymore (still). I'm trying, and I like the text layout on the cover a bit, but everything about it has been awful for... well since this latest numbering. And even then Whedon's run was only okay. But i digress, this is about covers.

Thunderbolts is one of my favourites (again because I'm a long time fan of the old stuff) but New Mutants 05 is easily a runaway pile of awesome

I see it now, Matt wakes up in the middle of the night for a snack. In the dimly lit kitchen he sees the mannequin head peering at him....creepy!

I concur about Thunderbolts. Talk about a series that needs more collections. But it does give me an inspiration for an idea to use on radio and blog....underrated writers / series. Kurt Busiek's stuff would definitely make the list.

And damn I think I am being digested by Venom..couldn't he wait until I was out of the city before chowing down????

@Matt: Haha yeah that's what it was. I knew there was a creepy inanimate head around somewhere lol

SINISTER SPIDER-MAN was definitely my pick for best cover this week (each cover has been better than the last with this series).

@Matt - My fiance has a couple of those heads, too, after working in the salon business for as long as I've known her. There is something "clown level" eerie about them.
