Grant: I love the covers that Rafael Albuquerque has been doing for this storyarc. As far as I'm concerned, there's little better than thematically-linked covers. I suppose one of those things would be beautiful, well-written comics, which American Vampire also happens to have going on right now. Albuquerque and Scott Snyder are doing a terrific job on the title, and I'm eager to see how this arc is going to play out. Bring it on.
DEBRIS #2

A deadly junk storm forces Maya to take refuge in an ancient, forgotten place where she soon discovers that she’s not alone in the land beyond the safe zone.
Grant: Kurtis J. Wiebe just seems to be a fountain of interesting comic book ideas right now, as he is constantly releasing new books at Image that have some quality concepts behind them. Debris appears to be the latest in that long line, telling a desperate sci fi story of survival that had a pretty good opening issue. It also helps that Wiebe is back working with his Riley Rossmo, his Green Wake collaborater who has an awesome style that I'm always happy to see in comic books.
FLASH ANNUAL #1

• The Rogues – victorious? If THE FLASH had trouble with them individually, together they’ll kill him!
• Something worse than The Rogues is just waiting for the right moment to attack....
Grant: This might be one of the best uses of an annual that I've seen in the last little bit, as Flash Annual #1 is dropping a week after the last issue of Flash and it is finishing up the story that's been building in the main title. I'm excited to see an oversized issue of Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato's Scarlet Speedster. However, the solicitation seems to be making it clear that it isn't just Manapul pulling down art duties for this comic, so if there are multiple artists at play, I hope they divide the work load in a manner that adds to the story instead of taking away from it. We shall see.
NATIONAL COMICS LOOKER #1

• A fresh, sexy take on a classic DC character!
Grant: I really like this venture by DC of releasing thirty page one-shots reinventing older characters in their catalogue by letting creators running a little wild with the properties in question. It's an interesting way to give new ideas some time in the spotlight without having to take a chance on a new series, and I'm partial to the idea. But at the same time, I have to admit that a character who "uses her supernatural powers to protect the innocent as they navigate the corrupt world of high fashion and modeling" sounds kind of really dumb. However, knowing that it's only one issue, I'm willing to give it a gander. Hopefully there's something more to that concept than the solicitation would have one believe.
SKULLKICKERS #17

"SIX SHOOTER ON THE SEVEN SEAS," Conclusion
Somebody DIES! Or, everyone DIES! There's lots of DYING! Oh man, it's some kind of DEATH-fest goin' around. It's all epic and brutal and a major character DIES so you better order a ho-jillion copies. No, seriously, someone DIES. Big DEADING in the house. Also: The end of our incredible third story arc. Sweet.
Grant: "Big deading in the house" should be in more solicitations. This is seriously a perfect example of how a solicitation can be written in an interesting way that can actually create some interest in the title in question. Of course, I'm not surprised that Skullkickers would have a well-written solicit, as Jim Zub has been killing it on the title itself, and I'd expect no less from his talented hand. I'm mighty intrigued to see what this deathfest is all about.
WINTER SOLDIER #9

• Black Widow’s past has caught up to her! Can Bucky save her? And what happens if he can’t?
Grant: This, on the other hand, is kind of an awful solicitation. Not only is Marvel still using their terrible bullet point, they couldn't be troubled to use more than one. It smacks of laziness and makes one question why we bother writing solicitations in the first place when this is what we get. But I digress. My interest has been fading a little on this title, but with all the brouhaha that's been going on with Ed Brubaker's exit from Marvel Comics and the subsequent announcement that he'll be off Winter Soldier with issue #14, I think I might be able to stick it out that long. At the very least, there's the distinct possibility that I'll get five more issues of Michael Lark penned goodness, which is a compelling argument in itself to stick around. We'll see how things go.
X-O MANOWAR #4

Grant: I've really been enjoying Robert Venditti and Cary Nord's X-O Manowar relaunch. They've taken the story's pace a little slow, but I've generally enjoyed the speed that they're moving at. And I'm quite excited to see how Aric will deal with being stuck in present-day Earth instead of the Roman Empire of the past that he knows and (presumably) loves. I think things will really start picking up from here.

Busy week with X-Force, Green Lantern, American Vampire and a bunch of other good-to-decent reads, like BF:Minutemen and Darth Maul.
I have to disagree about the use of an Annual. Whenever an anniversary issue or an Annual drops with the conclusion of an arc I feel it turns away potential readers. For example, I would never think of picking up that Flash Annual. However, the Batman one was a self enclosed story that was one and done - perfect for someone looking to sample Snyder's Batman.
A number of years ago Johns had an Action Comics Annual that was a bunch of short stories that gave glimpses of what was to come in the comic for the next year. It was outstanding and hooked me into Action for a good while.
Hmm. Valid point, Brandon. I guess I'm just excited to know that the whole story will (hopefully) finish up in the one issue instead of being continued through a handful of different ones.
While I agree that self-contained annuals can be good, there's the concern that the story won't really reflect the main series (which I think the Batman Annual was guilty of).
I didn't read that Action Comics Annual, but it sounds like the best of all worlds. I wish more people did it that way.
I was willing to stay with Winter Soldier on the promise of more Brubaker & Guice, but nuts to that idea.
