Top Ten Tuesdays - 10 New Deadpool Ongoing Series

Deadpool has seen meteoric rise in his popularity in the past couple of years has surprised just about everyone. Whether it is from his appearance in the Wolverine: Weapon X film, or just a natural interest from readership, the Merc with a Mouth currently has three ongoing series, along with a fourth one starting in April, The Deadpool Corps. You think I'm joking? The editor of the Deadpool titles, Axel Alonso, confirmed it in his Twitter account. Unless I am mistaken, Wade Wilson now sits alongside the likes of Spider-Man and Wolverine as the only single characters from Marvel to have four ongoing titles, which are: his eponymous title, Deadpool: Merc with a Mouth, the recently started Deadpool Team-Up series, and the aforementioned Deadpool Corps. But why stop at four, right? This horse has not been flogged enough, and there's more juice to squeeze out of his popularity, so here are ten more ideas for new Deadpool ongoing series. Hit the jump to see the solicitations for them, including (badly) photoshopped mock up covers!.

1 - Astonishing Deadpool #1

Written by Joss Whedon
Art by Skottie Young
Release Date: June, 2010

Synopsis: THE HEROIC AGE IS HERE! Deadpool gets a pretty bad rep sometimes, maybe it's the ugly face, or the fact that he is insane, or all those people he has killed in his lifetime. One way or another, Wade Wilson wants to start being a hero AGAIN and to be recognized by the public and his peers as such, so he contracts the same publicist that the Astonishing X-Men hired. Watch as Deadpool struggles between doing what is right, and what would be really funny, and trying not to kill anyone in front of the cameras. Join the all star creative team of Buffy-tastic Joss Whedon and Oz-esque Skottie Young as they portray Deadpool like you have never seen him before: trying to play nice!

2 - Deadpool: Origins #1

Written by Daniel Way
Art by Steve Dillon
Release Date: October, 2010

Synopsis: Wade Wilson. Deadpool. A man cursed to never fully remember his past ecause of the constant shifting of his brain cells and his damaged synapses. But now, due to jaw dropping conclusion of Shadowland and his fight with the Punisher, Deadpool remembers exactly what happened during his time at the Project X facility, and he is not very happy about it. The Merc With a Mouth embarks on a long and arduous journey, eventually coming to face with his arch-nemesis T-Ray and meeting his... son? That can't be right, no one in his right mind would sleep with Deadpool, right? Read this title, with the all star team from Wolverine: Origins behind it, to find out about it!

3 - Deadpool's Pal Agent X #1

Written by Gail Simone
Art by UDON studioes
Release Date: January, 2011

Synopsis: Alex Hayden, Agent X, used to hate Deadpool. After becoming morbidly obese, he came to rely on the services of Wade Wilson, and the two soon developed a friendship unlike any other. Sure, they still hate each others guts, but they share a sense of humor and that means that on their free time they go around the city investigating crime and playing deadly pranks of unsuspecting civilians. The police do not take kindly to Agent X and Deadpool doing their job, and hilarity ensues. Welcome the all-star creative team of Gail Simone and UDON studios in this buddy cop-killer comedy series that will have you laughing, crying, and possibly urinating yourself.

Synopsis: When the mafia wants someone really f#$&ing dead, they pool their resources together and hire the craziest motherf#$&ing assassin that has ever lived. What the Deadpool assassin has done to some of its victims are the kind of things that would give the chills to the most hardened criminal. Featuring an all star f#$&ing bloody team of Garth Ennis and Clayton Crain, this is THE f#$&ing book to watch out for this year. F#$&!

5 - Deadpool Forever #34

Written by Joe Kelly
Art by Ed McGuinness
Release Date: December, 2011

Synopsis: Back in the late 1990's, Joe Kelly did a years-long defining run on the first ever Deadpool series. In 1999, he left to work for the Distinguished Competition, and left Deadpool...forever. Have you ever wondered what would have happened if he had stayed in the title? Well, wonder no more, because we are reuniting him with everyone's favorite Merc With a Mouth, picking up exactly where he left off in Deadpool #33, based on the notes he had back them. It'll be if like Joe Kelly had never left Deadpool, and joining him in this nostalgia-fueled fest is all star artist Ed McGuiness, who illustrated the very first issue of the Deadpool ongoing series.

6 - Tiny Deadpool: Mini-Merc With a Mouth #1

Written by Art Baltazar and Franco
Art by Art Baltazar
Release Date: March, 2012

Synopsis: AW YEAH DEADPOOL! Because you demanded it! An all new ongoing series friendly for readers of all ages. Deadpool has to attend primary school, and here he has to deal with chronic-homework-copying Taskmaster, the insufferable teacher's pet Cable, not to mention competing class clown Spider-Man. And what will he do about his crush Squirrel Girl? She looks like she has cooties, but it may just be the squirrels that follow her all the time. There's also the class bully, Bullseye, and the evil Home Economics teacher, Norman Osborn. Created by the Eisner nominated team of Art Baltazar and Franco, Tiny Deadpool will be fun for all the family.

7 - Ultimate Comics Deadpool #1

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by Mark Bagley

Synopsis: With various ongoing series, and an incredibly complicated back story, Deadpool has become impossible for new readers to join in on the fun. Ultimate Comics Deadpool is the answer to this, featuring a more streamlined and modern take on the Merc With a Mouth, and an update of his origin to reflect the developments that the character went through after his feature film. Perfect for new readers that have just seen the movie, Ultimate Comics: Deadpool is a stand alone series set in a separate contiunity that is not bogged down by the other Deadpool titles. Welcome back the original architects of the Ultimate universe, Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley, as they update Deadpool for a new generation.

8 - All Star Deadpool #9000

Wade Wilson has learned that his cancer has finally beaten his regenerative powers, and he is dying. Before he passes away, he wishes to leave an important legacy behind, say farewell to his wives Sandy and Outlaw, make peace with all of his enemies, and finally learn the truth about his 4th-wall breaking powers. This last item on his list leads him to learn the universal meta-truth of his existence and all of the universe as he meets his creators... all of them! The powerhouse team of Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely bring the end of the Merc with a Mouth in a series that is bound to break the internet in half!

9 - Deadpool: Who Will Wield The D-Shield? #1

Synopsis: Wade Wilson has died, but the legacy of Deadpol lives on! But just who exactly is under those tights, and who is going to wield the Vibranium D-Shield that he has been using since The Reckoning War? It's someone with fighting skills to match those of Deadpool, Iron Fist or Daredevil, perhaps? Someone with a sense of humor so maybe it is Spider-Man? But what if it is the villainous Taskmaster, or the back stabbing Agent X? And what is the evil Dr. Bong up to in the background? And how do the Great Lake Avengers and Forbush Man play into all this? Involving all of the supporting characters from the Deadpool family, it's a mystery of epic proportions, but one thing is clear, after this series is done, nothing will ever be the same! Ed Brubaker and Gerard Parel bring you the story that ushers the new age of Deadpool comics!

10 - DPR (Deadpool Returns) #1

Written by Frank Miller
Art by Frank Miller
Release Date February, 2016

Synopsis: Thirty years ago, Frank Miller revolutionized the way we thought about Batman, and now he is giving Deadpool the same treatment! Set in a dystopian future, Wade Wilson, now a middle aged man, has retired from the mercenary business. Deep inside, however, he aches to go back, he misses the feeling of the streets fearing his sight, and the thrill of a perfectly performed assassination. The merc business is now filled with young brats, rash and strong, but lacking any respect for the profession. Wade Wilson decides to wear the Deadpool costume once more to teach them all a lesson in respect. Do not miss this book by industry legend Frank Miller as tells the definitive Deadpool story!

Conclusion

Ten more Deadpool ongoing series sound crazy, but you know, I actually wouldn't be very surprised to see some of these happening. And admit it, there's probably one or two up there that you would read yourself. Let us know in the comment section!

And here, boys and girls, we have an example of why the internet is a good thing.

Matt, I love these covers, the Astonishing one is absolutely brilliant. That would be the title I'd actually buy out of these ten.

I love that each cover has its own style and vibe running for it. To find such disparate uses for the 'Pool is truly inspiring.

What makes this all the more sadder, though, is that these concepts have worked for other characters, and I could almost see Marvel spruiking for a Deadpool Forever run from Kelly.

You've swung for the bleachers and smashed the lights, old friend. Well in.

I love the solicit for DeadpoolMAX. That and Tiny Deadpool would go on my pull list in a heartbeat.

As ridiculous as the current Deadpool craze is, I would totally buy half of the those books, namely Tiny, All-Star, Forever, and Agent X.
Speaking of, when is the Simone-Udon stuff going to be collected? The Kelly McGuiness stuff is spread across 3 TPBs.

i would definitely check out a tiny deadpool series

Damn, Deadpool returns needs to happen ASAP. Seeing as Frank Miller perfected his self-parody with The Spirit, combining that with Deadpool should result in so much win people's heads would explode. Right now I am picturing Deadpool assassinating the Reagan analogue from DKR. Then add in the strip club sequence from ASM #611, but for reals this time. It's glorious.

Deadpool Returns, Deadpool Origins, Tiny Deadpool, and definitely Deadpool MAX. I would actually read all that if it came out

I actually suggested a Deadpool Corps book to Matt before he pointed out to me that quote by Axel Alonso. If that can make it through, I have no doubt half of these titles won't be turned into ongoings by year's end.

My addition would have been a Deadpool & Taskmaster Go to White Castle ongoing. just a buddy book with him and Taskmaster.

I'm surprised we haven't seen an Ultimate Deadpool series yet.

By the way, what about Marvel Adventures: Deadpool?

Dennis N said...

This was hilarious! The main Deadpool ongoing should just come out weekly. Deadpool Team-up has been lame, and Merc with a mouth should have ended at 6 issues. Also, the existing Ultimate Deadpool character is lameeee.

Tiny Deadpool and Deadpool Returns would be on my list if they existed, they sound like entertaining ideas (though I'm still waiting for a Taskmaster/Deadpool team-up book)

Based on that solicit, I would TOTALLY buy a Tiny Deadpool series.

Who knows, with Kid Deadpool in DPC Wars, there may be a perfect opportunity to spin him off into a series just like that.

Or maybe not.

I can't help but wonder, though, just who else might get placed in what spots. T-Ray as the gymnastics teacher? Kindergardener Bob, the kid who just won't stop following Deadpool around? Principal Summers? The possibilities are astounding!

Due to the Wolverine origins movie?....

I think this article is troll bait.

Yaw thought I was crazy before but watch... Deadpool will be in an Avengers book... I think it would be awesome.. we'll see

Looks like Tiny Deadpool takes the win. Obviously people want to expose their children to a psychotic killer for hire. Awesome ;)

Kudos Matt! Count me in as someone who has taken a huge liking to Deadpool recently, and your ideas could very well turn out be true :D

But.. why no Bulleyes-DP series?? That would just rock!

I would defintely buy Tiny, Max, Agent X, Origins.. darn, I must be a DP groupie for wanting more after getting 3 (4) on goings already LOL.

Awesome. Probably Marvel will do a few of these ideas, since they lack some anyways. How about Deadpool & KidPool series

Nathan Aaron said...

I really, really, really, really, really HATE Deadpool. But then I've never been a fan of Wolverine, so there ya go. LOL At first I thought you were serious what that post title of ten titles, and I was like "WHAT the Hell, Marvel?!" LOL

Nathan Aaron said...

OH, and obviously Skottie Young will be unavailable to illustrate Astonishing Deadpool, as Marvel will have him on The Wizard of Oz minis along with Eric, for the rest of their lives. THAT'S my dream, anyway. I mean, how many Oz books are there? Keep on keepin' on, Skottie! I LOVE those books!

A 1000 times yes to Deadpool Forever. That would be the greatest thing ever.

Getting too much Deadpool is like getting too much pie or too much beer: yeah, you know it's too much, but you're not exactly yelling stop, either.

Even though played straight Deadpool's sad and kind of horrifying, Garth Ennis on a Max Deadpool? Yes, please.

ShadowWing Tronix said...

"Deadpool of infinite earths"

Oooh, that's a scary thought.

Matt Duarte said...

Thanks for all the positive comments everyone, I had a blast writing this article and I am glad you guys liked it. Tiny Deadpool seems like the obvious winner among the bunch, so you guys should email this or twitter it to Axel Alonso and tell him to hire me.

@ShadowWingTronix: Marvel Adventures was in my original draft for this, but I was having a hard time thinking of the solicit info, so ended up changing it for Tiny Deadpool.

@Anonymous #12: I don't see how that qualifies as troll bait. Please do explain yourself.

@Daryll B: There's actually an unpublished comic called "Deadpool Almost Destroys the Marvel Universe", drawn and written by Jim Calafiore. It was prepared as a fill-in issue, and the art was finished, but it never got published. Calafiore published the art and script online, and some fans did the lettering. It's not very hard to find, if you look for it. I wouldn't be very surprised that with the current Deadpool craze if the thing finally does get published.

You can read more about it here
