Comic Book Week in Review for 06/11/08

Since a lot of stuff happened this week, what with Chuck Dixon leaving DC, Secret Six being announced for September, my joining Twitter and the announcement of the Atomic Robo Giveaway Contest winners, among other things, I thought I'd dust off the Comic Book Week in Review and give a quick run down of what people may have missed this week. Hit the jump for a quick recap.

I think the biggest news, regarding the Weekly Crisis, had to be the announcing of the winners of the signed Atomic Robo Vol 1 TPB Giveaway contest. This was my first contest here at the Weekly Crisis and it was a resounding success. To reiterate, the winners were:

Sean Whitmore, Crystal Vickers & Jennifer Rubinovitz!

Congratulations to the winners and thank you for entering and all your support to those who entered.

Next up was the creation and launching of the Weekly Crisis Comic Shop through Amazon.com. I want to reiterate that all profits from the store will be put towards future contests and the more people spend and use the store, the more contests and larger prizes I will be able to offer in the future.

Furthermore, it was during the announcement of the store that I let it slip that I was planning another contest for August 1st in honour of the Weekly Crisis' One Year Anniversary. Mark your calendars, everyone!

Lastly, in Weekly Crisis news, I set up a Twitter account earlier in the week and have been posting random blurbs, from site updates to comic related links and so on, on there on a regular basis. If you haven't yet, feel free to follow me on Twitter!

Chuck Dixon Leaves DC

In comic book news, the biggest news had to be Chuck Dixon leaving DC for undisclosed reasons. Not even CBR or Newsarama could get anything from either party on the reasons for the break up, but Dixon has written his last Robin and Batman and the Outsiders issues and this is a black eye for DC in my opinion.

Speculation has put it as a difference of opinion on either the future of the Outsiders story or something to do with Batman RIP and how it affects both titles Dixon is writing, but, for now, that is not confirmed and there is literally no word from either party to verify or disprove those claims.

Elseworlds Webseries

On Monday, I stumbled upon a great fanmade webseries called Elseworlds revolving around the adventures of Huntress and Mr Terrific, who are being hunted by John Stewert and Batgirl.

It had extremely high production values for a fanmade video and the link will lead you to an embedded YouTube video of the first episode with the promise of more to come in the future. Definitely something any comic fan would enjoy.

Captain Blasto

Captain Blasto is a webseries that has won several awards, including Best Feature Film at GenCon Film Festival '07, and the creators actually emailed me a link to their site to let me know about it and I'm glad they did! It's definitely something I believe everyone will enjoy and you can view the trailer for the series above or go to CaptainBlasto.com and watch the first two episodes online, with more to follow.

To sum it up, the series is about a man that is bored with life and, with the aid of his friend, stages fake, and deliciously campy, robberies that he then foils in his new super hero guise as Captain Blasto! The first episode starts a little slow, but it kicks it into high gear in the second episode with his first outing as Captain Blasto. The cinematography is great and I love the "comic book panel" scenes. You'll know them when you see them. Highly recommend you take a look at this one as I was smiling through the whole thing and I can only imagine how many of us have thought about dressing up and stopping "crimes" like this.

Comic Book Reader Polls

The Weekly Crisis ran a few polls over the past couple weeks and I've summed up the results in pretty pie charts with my thoughts on the results. I've reposted the poll results below, but you can view the three results, with full commentary from me, by clicking here, here and here.

Finally, to wrap this up, I launched a new column last Tuesday in the form of Top 10 Tuesdays. The first edition featured 10 Must Read Books Gone Wrong and was a huge success that generated a lot of feedback from readers and I look forward to posting the next Top 10 Tuesdays this coming week.
