The Death of Batman?

Sensationalism at its best this week in the form of Lying In The Gutters claiming Batman will be dead by the end of next summer, most likely in June or July. While I don't believe it for a second, as DC already tried this stunt and aborted it back with Knightfall and Azbats, let's run with this for a second. LITY goes on to say that a 'Robin' will replace Batman and lists Tim Drake and Jason Todd or even Red Robin as the potential candidates. On top of this, he expects us to believe that they will end the long running Batman title and replace it with a shiny new #1 issue.

While the LITG column is mildly entertaining, in a National Enquirer sort of way, this is just a pathetic attempt at drawing traffic and stirring up controversy. Does anyone honestly believe this will happen? Only way a Batman dies is if it's on another Earth or DiDio finally gets his wish and kills Nightwing as he stands in for a vacationing Batman.

Hit the jump if you want the full, trashy tabloid style rumour excerpt.

THE DEATH OF A BAT

In June/July, DC are killing off Batman. Or rather, Bruce Wayne. Robin will inherit the Batman cowl. One of the Robins anyway. Tim Drake. Jason Todd. Or possibly Red Hood. Hey, maybe Jean-Paul Valley, it has been ten years since Azrael.

Either way, the book will relaunch with a nice shiny #1.

Yes, didn't Captain America miss a trick there? I'm sure Marvel will do the same come 2009.

And what of Batwoman? Well, I'm told the launch of the Rucka/Williams series has been pushed back yet again because of the movie, and fears of "unacceptable media coverage." I'm told four issues are fully completed.

Apparently it's okay for Batman to be dead, and a new character take his place when there's a movie out. But not for Batwoman to be a lesbian. At least wait till it's gone to DVD for that brunette bombshell.

I'm reminded of the Warner Bros executive instruction to Grant Morrison and Dave McKean over "Arkham Asylum," that the Joker not be seen dressing up as Madonna in case the cinema audience believed that meant Jack Nicholson was a transvestite.

Ugh. I don't even want to read more about this. Just plain stupid.

I think your insulting reaction to this story is unprofesional and it makes a new reader to the blog, such as myself, very cautious to take YOU seriously as a news source without worrying the info being tainted by personal opinions.
And honestly...SO what? It's Batman and just like all the rest he would come back. And no matter what, you're all going to spend money on it in one way or another.

Sorry you feel that way Anonymous, but the whole point of this site is to give my opinion on things.

It's not a news site, it's a personal blog and just about every post will have my opinion on the subject.

I gave the full, unedited story and link to the rumour column and my opinion on the material.

I will believe this when I see it or when Kurt Busiek writes Final Crisis, or Catwoman's baby dies. LITG is a fun read, when I read a rumor I like I hope it is true but I do not expect it to be true. I hope there is a Powergirl series coming soon but I won't be surprised if it doesn't happen.

I have heard that one of the heroes in the "Heroes die. Legends live forever." image for Final Crisis dies in Final Crisis. Let's see... who has died so far, Superman, Wonder Woman, GL Hal Jordan, Flash WW, Hawkman. Oh look Batman is the only one on there that has not died. I am one of the biggest Bat fans out there, but it looks as if DC is going to kill him during the summer of 2008. Hmmm right around time for the movie.... Dont get me wrong, he will be back most likely, but not until after he shows thats someone with no super powers can save the universe.

Hey kirk, what are your thoughts on what I said?

Sorry I missed your comment with this week's comic reviews piling in.

Hmm, it's a plausible theory. That's definitely the best reasoning I've heard for this horrible, horrible decision on DCs part (if they go through with it).

Another option is the Flash...again.

In the Lightning Saga, Brainiac trapped something in that lightning rod and there were all kinds of allusions to Barry coming back instead of Wally.

Add in that Flash's always die in Crisises and the Flash has only one foot on the ground, like one foot in the grave (and similar pose on the Countdown teaser) and it could also be argued Flash will die.

Personally, I'm tired of the mandatory deaths in every single DC event. Marvel killed Cap, but Brubaker planned it from the start of his run and it just bled into Civil War perfectly. That's story driven death. DC's of late feel like a name out of a hat crapshoot.
