Post-Crisis Comic Book Previews for 10/10/07

Post-Crisis Comic Book Previews coming at you againt this week with one of the stongest lineups ever. Comics like Nova, Green Lantern, Astonishing X-Men, Black Adam, and many more, like Runaways and JSA that were delayed from last week. Before you hit up the previews, make sure you check out this week's Weekly Crisis Comic Book Reviews! As always, feel free to comment on my selections or suggest a book you think I'd be interested in or you want to see reviewed and I'll do what I can to pick it up next week. Read on for next week's previews.

KIRK'S PULL LIST FOR MARVEL COMICS FOR OCTOBER 10, 2007

AMAZING SPIDER-GIRL #13
COVER BY: RONALD FRENZ
WRITER: TOM DEFALCO
PENCILS: RONALD FRENZ
I, Hobgoblin!”
While Spider-Girl deals with the guilt over what happened to her baby brother, the Hobgoblin narrates this issue as he cements his plans for a gang war with the Black Tarantula.
32 PGS./Rated A …$2.99

KIRK'S COMMENTS: I loved the use of Hobgoblin at the end of the original Spider-Girl series and I'm glad to see the Kingsley version finally getting some major action in this new series. With the excellent ending to the Carnage arc, I'm actually starting to get excited about this series again.

ASTONISHING X-MEN #23
COVER BY: JOHN CASSADAY
WRITER: JOSS WHEDON
PENCILS: JOHN CASSADAY
“UNSTOPPABLE”
The end is near. The situation is dire. The outlook is bleak. But Cyclops has a plan. Part 5 (of 6)
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99

KIRK'S COMMENTS: They must be really working hard on this book. It's almost monthly again. *yawn* While great, I wish I had waited for trades instead of being stuck waiting for two over hyped 'superstars' to bother with the meager masses and put out a book on time. I'll have to dust off the last bunch of issues and get caught up again to get any momentum from this issue, but should be decent. Maybe they'll get around to putting out the preview cover as well.

DAREDEVIL #101
COVER BY: MARKO DJURDJEVIC
WRITER: ED BRUBAKER
PENCILS: MICHAEL LARK
Things couldn't be going worse for Matt Murdock. Everything he thought he'd gotten back teeters on the edge of a precipice, ready to shatter all around him, as he fights a battle on both fronts of his life–in the courtroom and on the rooftops of Hell's Kitchen! The searing second chapter of "Without Fear!”
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99

KIRK'S COMMENTS: While issue #100 was a great look back with an all-star lineup of creators chipping in, it did nothing for the actual story Brubaker has been building. Hopefully we get some plot movement in this issue. I also have to comment on that cover. That is another incredible cover on the part of Djurdjevic.

FANTASTIC FOUR #550
COVER BY: MICHAEL TURNER
WRITER: DWAYNE MCDUFFIE
PENCILS: PAUL PELLETIER
Reed and Sue team up with the New FF in a desperate gambit to find the source of the disease wracking the fabric of spacetime itself. Only one being can follow such an ineffable trail but a resentful Silver Surfer is in no mood to help King T'Challa. Plus Dr. Strange, The Watcher, and the awesome destiny of Gravity!
32 PGS./Rated A …$2.99

KIRK'S COMMENTS: Man I hate those Turner covers. He is definitely this generations Rob Liefeld. That said, McDuffie has had a rocky run on FF. The last issue had some potential with a great Sue moment. Let's hope he can keep up the pace and finish strong before the Millar / Hitch run begins.

FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #24
COVER BY: JOE QUESADA
WRITER: J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI
PENCILS: JOE QUESADA
"One More Day," Part 2 of 4
One More Day continues as J. Michael Straczynski and Joe Quesada present Part 2 of what will be the most talked–about comic event of the year. The stakes have never been higher for Peter Parker. At his darkest hours -- and he's had plenty -- Peter has always had one shoulder to lean on, one person who'd remind him who he is, who he was, and who he can be. Now he's about to lose that person. What would he do...what would you do, if you only had "One More Day?” PLUS: Director's Cut style extras!
48 PGS./Rated A …$3.99

KIRK'S COMMENTS: I like the attempt at the old fashioned cover styles, but Joe Q's art is not impressing me here. He's done better work and hopefully this issue actually progresses this story. The first issue just rehashed the entire Back in Black arc.

NEW AVENGERS #35
COVER BY: LEINIL FRANCIS YU
WRITER: BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS
PENCILS: LEINIL FRANCIS YU
The Hood makes his play for the big time by gathering the most ruthless rogues gallery of evil the Marvel Universe has ever seen. What does a guy who wants to be the “Kingpin of all super-villains” do to make his point? You have to see it to believe it.
Guest-Starring Tigra. Poor Tigra. Poor, poor Tigra.
32 PGS./Rated A …$2.99

KIRK'S COMMENTS: Now there's a cover that will sell issues. Take cash cow Wolverine, add a dash of Venom, stir for 5 minutes and bake for 10 and voila, instant top 10 book. Looking forward to seeing more of The Hood and I hope Bendis isn't going to kill off Tigra based on that solicit. Either way, I'll be picking this up.

NEW WARRIORS #5
COVER BY: NIC KLEIN
WRITER: KEVIN GREVIOUX
PENCILS: PACO MEDINA
The Zodiac strikes back as Sofia performs a heroic deed, and pays for it dearly! Night Thrasher’s world crumbles as one of the New Warriors dies on his watch. Is this the end of the New Warriors? And what is Tony Stark’s next plan to bring the team to the side of justice?
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99

KIRK'S COMMENTS: You'd think the cover would be a picture of Night Thrasher holding the New Warrior that died last issue, but I guess someone decided that the no-name NW member gets the shaft to the equally no-name, but former New X-Men, Sofia. This series really broke out for me with last issue's excellent outing. I expect big things this month from this book. The followup to that death last issue should be a major issue with the SHRA and I'm curious to see how it plays out.

NOVA #7
COVER BY: ADI GRANOV
WRITER: DAN ABNETT
ANDY LANNING
PENCILS: SEAN CHEN
BRIAN DENHAM
The next phase in the NOVA series is set up in this conquest chapter! What has Gamora–now a special Select agent of the Phalanx–done to Rich Rider? Has the Worldmind fallen into the hands of the tyrannical tech race? And which ANNIHILATION character returns to alter Nova's role in ANNIHILATION: CONQUEST?
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99

KIRK'S COMMENTS: Glorious Nova action. How I hate choosing between you and Green Lantern each month for Book of the Week. With that sad death of Ko-Rel last issue, I'm pumped for more Nova and Annihilation: Conquest action this month. Will it beat out the Sinestro Corps this month? Either way, we win with books as good as those two.

X-FACTOR #24
COVER BY: PABLO RAIMONDI
WRITER: PETER DAVID
PENCILS: PABLO RAIMONDI
THE ISOLATIONIST
The stunning conclusion to THE ISOLATIONIST. Josef Huber has been manipulating X-Factor in the hopes of gathering together all mutants. But post M-Day, with their numbers dwindling, amassing the world’s remaining mutants could reduce them to a single target. With Layla Miller lost and wandering the streets of New York, Siryn and Monet shepherding the twins Molly and Wally to safety, and the rest of the team still reeling from their confrontation with Quicksilver, can X-Factor Investigations uncover Huber’s plans before harm comes to the remnants of mutantkind? Part 4 (of 4)
Featuring Endangered Species Chapter 15 – Guided by Doctor Strange, Beast explores the mystical corners of the Marvel Universe and discovers that M-Day has destroyed more lives than he thought possible.
40 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99

KIRK'S COMMENTS: Dr Strange sure is getting around these days. He's over with Spidey in OMD, here in Endangered Species and running around with Night Nurse at night while working days with the New Avengers. Makes you wonder if he's a Skrull or not. X-Factor is usually pretty top notch. Looking forward to a strong finish on this Isolationist story arc.

KIRK'S PULL LIST FOR DC COMICS FOR OCTOBER 10, 2007

COUNTDOWN 29
Story by Paul Dini
Breakdowns by Keith Giffen
Script by Adam Beechen; art by Carlos Magno
Covers by Ian Churchill & Norm Rapmund
Karate Kid confronts Brother Eye! Jimmy Olsen is grabbed by Forager! Shadowpact tries to subdue an out-of-control Mary Marvel! The Crime Syndicate, the Extremists and Monarch gather against the Challengers! Holly and Harley arrive on Paradise Island — and begin their “training”! A lucky coin-toss might have Two-Face save Piper and Trickster from Checkmate! And who is the mysterious— but funny — Jokester? Oh, and Mister Mxyzptlk explains it all!
Plus, more DC villains origin back-up stories written by Scott Beatty, including Zod, Deadshot & Two-Face. The COUNTDOWN continues!

KIRK'S COMMENTS: Countdown has really shaped up in the last couple weeks. It is actually readable for a change these last couple weeks and all the tie-ins are actually doing quite well with the exception of the Wildstorm issue. Could DC salvage this 'event'? I don't know but it is definitely looking promising if they can keep this upswing going.

GREEN ARROW/BLACK CANARY #1
WRITTEN by Judd Winick
Art and cover by Cliff Chiang
Variant cover by Chiang
The new Green Arrow/Black Canary team investigates the shocking results of the Wedding of the Century in an all-new adventure that brings the Star City-crossed lovers together!

KIRK'S COMMENTS: Ya, I'm a sucker. I'll be picking this up to find out what happened with the end of the Wedding Special.

BLACK ADAM: THE DARK AGE #3
Written by Peter J. Tomasi
Art by Doug Mahnke & Christian Alamy
Cover by Mahnke
After Black Adam and Faust strike a deal within the bowels of Fate's Tower that will aid Adam in his search for the lost amulet of Isis, Adam finds himself face to face with his former JSA teammate, Hawkman, in an epic battle that will rock the streets and skies of St. Roch!

KIRK'S COMMENTS: I didn't get around to posting my review of Black Adam #2, but you can check out how awesome it was in the Moments of the Week for 09/12/07 when it came out. To say the least, it was one of the best books that week and I'm disappointed I couldn't get that review up. This month's issue, as you can tell from the cover, seems to have some major action with Teth probably running into his old JSA 'friends' or possibly just Hawkman. Can't wait.

BOOSTER GOLD #3
Written by Geoff Johns & Jeff Katz
Art and cover by Dan Jurgens & Norm Rapmund
This is it! The DEATH of BOOSTER GOLD!! And nothing will ever be the same aga...wait. We already tried to kill him? Really? Well, in this issue Booster Gold heads back to the Old West and runs into Jonah Hex. You know, that crazy looking gunfighter! But what does Jonah Hex have that Booster desperately needs? Plus: the Death of Jonah Hex!!
What? We can't kill him either? Well, someone’s going to fall off a horse at least!*
(*Warning: This issue may not contain a scene of anyone falling off a horse.)

KIRK'S COMMENTS: Booster Gold is one of the best books coming out of DC these days. I'm not a big fan of Jonah Hex, but I'll be picking this issue up on the strength of the first two and the promise of someone falling off a horse.

GREEN LANTERN #24
Written by Geoff Johns
Art and cover by Ivan Reis & Oclair Albert
The Sinestro Corps War” continues as Hal Jordan and the world's greatest heroes struggle against the combined terror of Sinestro, Parallax and the Corps of Fear. And when Hal finds himself face-to-face with one of the most bizarre members of the Sinestro Corps he has a simple choice to make — keep fighting and die or lay down and walk away. Plus, what is the prophecy of the Blackest Night and what does it mean to the future of Hal Jordan and the Corps?

KIRK'S COMMENTS: As I said in the Nova comments, it's a shame I have to chose between those two books every month to decide Book of the Week. I think Green Lantern will win out though, as it is smack dab in the middle of the Sinestro Corps War while Nova is merely in the building up phase to Conquest. Based on the cover to this issue, looks like that sea of yellow above Earth puts our heroes to task. Can't wait for this one.

KIRK'S PULL LIST FOR IMAGE COMICS FOR OCTOBER 10, 2007

DYNAMO 5, VOL. 1: POST-NUCLEAR FAMILY TPB
Story JAY FAERBER
Art & Cover MAHMUD A. ASRAR & RON RILEY
He was the world’s greatest hero, but Captain Dynamo was not a faithful husband. Now he's dead and his family is trying to piece their lives together. As his enemies descend on his unprotected city, Captain Dynamo's widow rounds up his five illegitimate children, each of whom have inherited one of their father's super-powers. Can these total strangers come to terms with their powers, their father's legacy and each other as total chaos erupts?
Collects DYNAMO 5 #1-7
BURST - LOW INTRODUCTORY PRICE OF $9.99!

KIRK'S COMMENTS: $9.99 for 7 issues in this TPB! Dynamo 5 is an excellent series and this TPB collects the entire first arc. This is worth every penny, especially for that low price. I don't usually feature TPB's in my previews, but this one is a series many probably passed over the first time around and I think you should definitely grab this trade.

DYNAMO 5 #8
Story JAY FAERBER
Art & Cover MAHMUD A. ASRAR & RON RILEY
ALL-NEW STORY! ALL-NEW PRICE!
It’s the debut of a brand new villain: Bonechill! But after the events of last issue, the Dynamo 5 team is in shambles, so they’re going have to confront Bonechill without two of their most powerful members!

KIRK'S COMMENTS: Once you finish with the trade collecting the first storyline, jump right in with this, the start of the second major arc.

*Note* Solicit information and covers from DC and Marvel respectively. This post does not contain all comics coming out next week, just the ones I intend on purchasing.

Sorry to tell you, but Astonishing got pushed back to October 24.

Kirk Warren said...

Really? Damn. I grab these from the Marvel Catalog on their website and DC's website listings. I guess updating the website got delayed as well, ahha. Thanks for the update. Won't bother looking for this Wednesday.

Oh yeah. You shouldn't trust them. DC almost never updates. Marvel does, but there are mistakes from time to time. You should check Diamond every Monday or Midtown.
