Image Round-Up - December 24th 2013

The Image Round Up column aims to get some words down on Image Comics book published for the week. This week's review is handled by Ricardo Guajardo. He'll be dropping a non-spoilery review so you can best make up your mind whether to buy or not. We offer this service because Image has been putting out some amazing content lately and it will be nice to shine a light on every single title they produce.

The Saviors #1

Reading about the premise of this comic piqued my interest as I love sci-fi stories mixed in with suspense. Add that it is written by James Robinson, it's certainly a promising comic.

Anyway, after checking out the preview pages I was concerned that the character designs and art, it wasn't what I expected.  I wasn't familiar with J. Bone's work. Rest assured, the simple cartoony designs help out setting up the world in The Saviors as I actually dug it more and more as I continued reading. 

The comic focuses on stoner slacker Tomas. As the reader finds out Tomas is just a guy that has no ambition in life and is fine with what life gives him. We look more into Tomas' life by giving us his personal perspective on why he has that attitude, along with meeting the residents that live in the town until things throw his life upside down. 

If I give away too much in terms of plot, it is only because it is one of those comics where I had a smile on my face due to the characters actions and when things got real dark I kinda rooted for them to make it out of their dilemmas. 

The Saviors gave me quite some entertainment as I was reading, I loved how everything was set up nicely and then the mood of the story changed from one genre to another thus making it unpredictable in a fun manner. 

Is it the next Walking Dead in terms of high quality storytelling or the next big thing in comics? Who knows? But it's certainly another fun title that while it's not going to change a reader's perspective on what makes creator owned books awesome, it will make what to check out more. 

Verdict: Buy It!
