Post-Crisis Comic Book Previews for 10/24/12

 

Gathering round ladies and gentlemen, for we have a most excellent edition of Post-Crisis Comic Book Previews for your reading pleasure!  In this week's iteration, you can find my thoughts on some of the more exciting books hitting stands tomorrow, including A-Babies vs. X-Babies #1, Bravest Warriors #1, Debris #4, and more!  So hit the jump to set your eyes upon it all!

A-BABIES VS X-BABIES #1

It's coming--and it's bringing babies with it! Who will live? Who will die? Who will get diaper rash? Find out as the X-Babies face the A-Babies in the tie-in to end all tie-ins!

Grant: While I'm not often in the habit of following Marvel's major events (beyond the spoilers they send off to major newspapers across the country), I am a big fan of their post-event tie-in comics.  These books are usually a ton of fun, offering a lighthearted take on whatever just went down, and the ridiculousness that is A-Babies vs. X-Babies #1 looks to continue this trend.  It also helps this book's fortunes that it is written by Skottie Young, the man who came up with the initial cover that spawned this idea, and drawn by Gurihiru, whose works seems perfectly suited to this type of endeavour.  I may not have been able to get excited for the actual fight between these two forces, but now that they're all toddlers, I can't resist the idea.

ADVENTURE TIME #9

Join Jake the Dog and Finn the Human as they try to right the wrongs of a Jake-caused TIME PARADOX! If you haven’t checked out the comic book adaptation of the hit Cartoon Network show, there’s no better time to jump into the all-ages sensation!

Grant: I'm starting to have difficulty imagining a point before Boom!'s Adventure Time comic book adaptation.  Or perhaps it would be more accurate to say that I don't want to imagine those terrible years that we had to go without the brilliance that is Ryan North, Braden Lamb, and Shelli Paroline's work on this title.  Such a reality, where we didn't even realize what we were missing out on, just seems so bleak and dreary in retrospect.  Fortunately, we don't have to dwell in those dark ages, because Adventure Time the comic is here and it continues to be wondrous, so all is well as far as I'm concerned.

BATMAN INCORPORATED #4

• BATMAN and TALIA AL GHUL continue their fight for control of their son DAMIAN – better known as ROBIN!

• WINGMAN and REDBIRD descent upon GOTHAM CITY! Who are these heroes, and what is their relationship to THE DARK KNIGHT?

Grant: It kind of feels like forever since the last issue of Batman, Incorporated, which considering it dropped back in August (not including the #0 issue), I guess it kind of has been.  Regardless, I'm mighty glad to see the next issue hitting stands this week, because Grant Morrison's work with the character has been as good as ever, and I consistently cannot wait to see what happens next.  This issue looks to be no exception, so let's get to it already!

BRAVEST WARRIORS #1

POWER! RESPECT! Based on ADVENTURE TIME creator Pendleton Ward’s brand-new animated series! Join Chris, Wallow, Beth and Danny, four 16-year-old heroes-for-hire, as they warp from galaxy to galaxy, saving alien races with the power of their…emotions. They’re noble, righteous and totally bodacious!

Grant: Speaking of Pendleton Ward properties being adapted into the comic book medium, this week also sees the release of the first issue of Bravest Warriors.  Like Adventure Time before it, I don't really know anything about this property (although this time it's because it hasn't really come out yet), but I'm really looking forward to it due to the creators Boom! has recruited to make it.  I love Boom!'s practice of bringing in people with strong internet followings to work on their books, and I think Joey Comeau and Mike Holmes are going to have something special on their hands here.

DEBRIS #4

Written by Kurtis J. Wiebe

Art by Riley Rossmo

The epic finale to the junk punk series sets the stage for a massive battle between humanity and the Colossals, with the fate of the entire human race in the balance. Maya must lead the Athabascan Tribe to victory against the insane wasteland dragon spirit, Nogo.

Grant: Kurtis J. Wiebe and Riley Rossmo's Debris has been an incredibly pleasant surprise.  The strange, beautiful wasteland they've created together makes for some incredibly cool scenes and visuals, and the story they're weaving has been just as thrilling.  They'll certainly have their work cut out for them to wrap the whole thing up in a satisfying manner in this single issue, but I have faith that these two talented creators are up to the task.  Should be fun.

NATIONAL COMICS: MADAME X #1

• The once-famous tarot card reader Madame X now works at a law firm as the resident “psychic” – but can her “powers” help her solve a complicated new case?

• From the acclaimed team of Rob Williams (Iron Man, Cla$War) and Trevor Hairsine (Captain America, Cla$War)!

Grant: I've repeatedly said that as long as DC keeps putting this book out, I'll keep picking it up.  I have a mighty hard time saying no to one-shot books, and I've really enjoyed the way the National Comics label has taken older characters and put a new spin on them.  I'm interested to see that they're using Madame Xanadu here, seeing as the character has a pretty well-established history behind her (and is actually currently appearing in the pages of Demon Knights).  It'll be interesting to see how that works out.  I'm also happy to see that DC are bringing two creators together who know each other from previous collaborations - I feel as if that will be a boon to the final product.  Also, it doesn't hurt that the book has such a dandy Fiona Staples cover.

PUNISHER: WAR ZONE #1

• The Punisher vs. The Avengers. Welcome to the War Zone.

Grant: And so we have yet another example of the solicitations for this book being pretty darned terrible.  Thankfully, these lackluster sentences have done nothing to impact the phenomenal work that Greg Rucka has been doing in the pages of his run with Frank Castle.  And things only look to be getting better as Frank has finally found himself on the Avengers' radar, which should make for some pretty good fireworks over the course of this five-issue miniseries to cap off Rucka's time with the character.  And while I'm still a little put out that Marco Checchetto isn't able to work on this book, it looks like Carmine Di Giandomenico will be a more than capable backup, so I'm eager to see how his interpretation of things play sout.

UNWRITTEN #42

The land of the dead is just a story, but Tom Taylor is going there anyway on a rescue mission that hasn’t been tried since Orpheus – provided he can get the door to open in the first place. And provided the worlds of story are still there... A hungry vampire and two misfit lovers gather around the campfire in “Live Like Lazarus.”

Grant: Mike Carey and Peter Gross never cease to amaze me with the creativity they consistently bring to their work on The Unwritten.  This series has grown far more than I ever could have conceived from its initial appearance as a pseudo-Harry Potter story, and Tom Taylor's latest trials are but the latest example of this.  Things have been crazy since Tom's confrontation with Leviathan, and they don't look to be slowing down at all here, which is a-ok in my books.
