Grant: I've seemingly been completely won over by the comic boo iterations of the Adventure Time series, and as far as I'm concerned, that's not a bad thing. Meredith Gran's ingress into this universe was a really interesting one. It wasn't necessarily quite as laugh out loud funny as the main series, but Gran appears to be building a story with a lot of heart. I was also particularly impressed at the way she presented the band's music in the soundless medium of comics. That and the fact that Faith Erin Hicks is doing this issue's backup is more than enough to bring me back for round 2.
AMERICAN VAMPIRE: LORD OF NIGHTMARES #3

Grant: I've been digging Scott Snyder and Dustin Nguyen's latest American Vampire tie-in series, and this solicitation succeeds in actually making me more excited for the forthcoming issue. I love when Snyder reveals more of the wacky world he's created, and a "very different kind of vampire" sounds like a revelation that I can get behind. However, intriguing solicitation or no, I'm realistically going to be buying this book for the opportunity to feast my eyes on Nguyen's beautiful art. I can never get enough of his work.

Grant: Valiant's new books have all been rather interesting, but while X-O Manowar is the only one that I've been following on a regular basis, I have a feeling that Archer & Armstrong might follow suit. I've long been a fan of a lot of Fred Van Lente's work, and his interview about the series only served to further grab my attention. I'm always game for an action-adventure that has its fair share of comedic moments, and that's certainly what this book has been billed as. If it can live up to expectations, I'll be mighty pleased.
ATOMIC ROBO AND THE FLYING SHE-DEVILS OF THE PACIFIC #2

It's called 'The Flying She-Devils of the Pacific.' If there's another combination of English words that could better sell you on a comic book than those, they probably involve 'give you' and 'a million dollars.'
Grant: Oh, Atomic Robo, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. You've got a killer writer in Brian Clevinger, the perfect artist in Scott Wegner, an atomic powered robot lead who always seems to know just what to do, and the best combination of action, adventure, and humour that a guy could wish for. And that's barely the tip of the iceberg. Seriously, guys, Atomic Robo is kind of the bees knees. If you aren't reading this, then I don't know what to say to you (beyond you should be reading this - it's got flying she-devils!).
ATOMIC ROBO: REAL SCIENCE ADVENTURES #5

How many untold tales of Atomic Robo can there be? Quite a few more! The Sparrow thwarts Nazis! Atomic Robo and Bruce Lee encounter the Hong Kong mastermind of crime, Tao Jones! Also conspiracies! Mysteries! And punching!
Grant: Real Science Adventures, like any anthology book, can be a bit of a mixed bag, but I've found that, on the whole, the hits generally outnumber the misses by a solid margin. I've really been enjoying all these short episodes, and at $2.75 for 18 pages of Atomic Robo-y goodness, how can a guy really say no? I'm hard pressed to answer that one, I must say.

Grant: I've yet to be entirely sold on the backup stories in these issues of Batman, but it is difficult to deny the quality that is the main feature. While Greg Capullo and Jonathan Glapion have been making some beautiful comics with Scott Snyder, I'm pretty excited to see Becky Cloonan drawing Batman. She all kinds of wonderful, and I have high hopes for her interpretation of Gotham's Caped Crusader. The only thing that disappoints me about this whole thing is that lackluster solicitation. Seriously, that's about as lazy as you can possibly get.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #7

Artist Becky Cloonan rejoins Brian Wood for a new story arc! Hearing of an impostor committing atrocities in his name, Conan returns to Cimmeria to confront the scoundrel. In the frozen North of Conan’s birth, it is now Bêlit who is out of her element!
Grant: Speaking of Becky Cloonan, I'm happy to see that I'll be getting a second helping of her brilliant arty goodness with her return to Brian Wood's Conan the Barbarian book. I doubt I'm alone when I say that Wood has managed to make me care about Conan, which is something that I didn't ever think I would be saying. And though I ultimately found myself really appreciating James Harren's efforts on this book, I'd be lying if part of me didn't yearn for Cloonan's delicious style, so I'm thrilled to have her back at least for a short while.
DEMON KNIGHTS #12

Grant: A year into DC's New 52, and I think I've finally realized part of the great appeal that Demon Knights holds for me: it's essentially the closest thing to Gail Simone's Secret Six that DC is publishing at the moment. Think about it. We have a dysfunctional team of superpowered peoples who are often at each others' throats whose adventures are both thrilling and oddly hilarious. It's not a perfect parallel, but it's as close as we're going to get.
MASSIVE #3

In a remote village in the Aleutian Islands, the crew of the Kapital, on the run from Siberian pirates, reconsiders their core mission as pacifists and conservationists. In this unpredictable and often violent world, should they be more? Narratives and story lines converge as the past catches up with the present, and in quiet, unassuming Unalaska, USA, a new mission is forged.
Grant: Brian Wood's new ongoing is an interesting kettle of fish. This book is unlike anything I've encountered before, combining a grounded in reality post-apocalyptic world with equal parts ecojustice movements and more nautical information than you can shake a stick at. It's made for some really interesting reading thus far, but the driving force behind these characters has been left a little vague. Hopefully the solicitation tells true and that will be cleared up by issue's end.
PLANETOID #3

Grant: I'm getting conflicting reports on whether or not this comic is coming out this week, but I really hope it is, because more of Ken Garing's Planetoid is good news for everyone. I'm head over heels for this new sci-fi book. It presents a take on the genre that is woefully under-represented in comic books in general, and while Garing's writing has sometimes been little exposition-heavy, his gorgeous art more than makes up for this minor issue. Garing is seriously my favourite artist find of 2012, and I cannot wait to get more of his work. Knowing that he has some exciting stuff coming out from Monkeybrain is reassuring, but I'll take as much of his written and drawn stuff as I get can get my hands on. Fingers crossed this is in my pullbox tomorrow.
PUNK ROCK JESUS #2

Grant: Sean Murphy's Punk Rock Jesus #1 was a brilliant opening issue to what looks to be a really good miniseries. Combining his brilliant art with a fantastic story of cloning, messiahs, and intrigue, Murphy's Punk Rock Jesus is the book I never knew I wanted. And with each issue counting 32 beautiful pages of black and white Murphy art - without ads, mind you - I cannot think of any reason for this not to be on your pull list radar.
Yep, some pretty exciting books coming our way this week. I'll be waiting at my local shops doors Wednesday morning for their doors to open so that I can gets these books as soon as possible. If you're not reading Harbinger, you're missing out BIG time! I started with XO Manowar, and decided to just pick up Harbinger on a lark. Issue #2 cemented it for me, I'd say it's better than XO right now! I'd definitely check it out if I were you! (Bloodshot was just alright, on the other hand.)
I bought the first couple issues of Massive and all I kept thinking was "I'm buying a book about a ship, looking for another ship." I finally dropped it, unfortunately. Just not much of a hook at this point.
