Comic-Con News Round Up - Day 2

San Diego Comic-Con marches on and with Day 2 in the history books, there's some more news for the comic buying public to digest.  However, there was little in the way of big announcements, with the day populated mostly by smaller details coming out during the various panels.  Hit the jump for a look at some of these stories.

DC Comics

DC ran themselves a Justice League / Green Lantern panel where they provided a grab bag of small tidbits on their upcoming titles that, in my estimation, aren't super noteworthy.  It was mostly basic stuff that people could figure out by simply waiting for the books to come out (or by making informed predictions).  Examples of this was the revelation that Captain Marvel (I refuse to call him Shazam) will be joining the Justice League in the near future and the reconfirmation that Justice League #13 will feature the introduction of Cheetah to the New 52.  Of course, there was also some Green Lantern stuff thrown in there, mostly talking about what to expect from the Zero issues in September.

The New 52 panel was also sprinkled with tiny morsels of info, but a lot of it was retreading things that have already been talked about elsewhere, again with an emphasis on the Zero issues.  Titles that received some talking time included Batgirl, Deathstroke, Firestorm, Superman, and more.

It seems like this just came out of a one on one talk, but I think the best DC news from yesterday was Scott Snyder saying that Jock would be back for more work on Batman in the next story arc.  Considering how great his stuff on Detective Comics was, I can't wait.

Marvel

Marvel's Cup o' Joe panel shed some light on their upcoming AvX spinoff books in October.  Not a ton of light, but some.  This was mostly limited to covers and creative teams.

• A+X is an ongoing from Jeph Loeb, Dan Slott, Dale Keown, and Ron Garney described as "the opposite" of AvX: Versus.  Make of that what you will.
• AvX: Consequences will be a five issue miniseries from Kieron Gillen, Tom Raney, and Mark Brooks that will look at (spoiler alert) the consequences of the AvX event.  This will release on a weekly basis until it's all out.
• Marvel NOW! Point One is a one-shot that will contain a number of short stories to help kick off the Marvel NOW! initiative.  Creator names that have been attached are Brian Michael Bendis, Matt Fraction, Jeph Loeb, Nick Spencer, Kieron Gillen, Dennis Hopeless, Steve McNiven, Michael Alled, Ed McGuinness, Jamie McKelvie, and Salvador Larroca, which is a pretty impressive list.
•  Finally, the book I'm most excited about (based solely on the cover, which ironically, is also where the idea came from) is the A-Babies vs. X-Babies one shot that will be written by Skottie Young and illustrated by Guruhiru.  This looks silly as all get out, and that's good enough for me.

Marvel also had an Ultimates Panel, where they revealed that there will be an Ultimate Iron Man mini from Nathan Edmundson and Matteo Buffagni.  It was also mentioned that the next event in the Ultimates universe will be called "Divided We Fall" and sounds like it will feature Captain American trying to save the world from itself or something similar.

IDW

IDW had perhaps the best announcement when they revealed the creative team behind their new Judge Dredd ongoing.  The team will be writer Duane Swierczynski and artist Nelson Daniel.  I've read a handful of Swierczynski's books and enjoyed Daniel's work on The Cape: 1969, so this will be real interesting to see when it comes.












Dark Horse / Joss Whedon

Dark Horse had a big ol' Joss Whedon love-in panel, which if you're a fan of his work, you should probably check out.  Highlights include him talking about his new film adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing, that he's going to be meeting with Warren Ellis about a project once Comic-Con finishes up, and that Dr. Horrible 2 is happening.  Not a lot of conclusive stuff, but definitely enough to whet the appetite.

Monkeybrain Comics

Monkeybrain continued to provide more information about its future projects, revealing the second wave of titles that are in the works.  There's a lot of interesting creators and ideas on that list, so that's definitely something to look forward to.  I'm particularly intrigued by Joe Keatings and Ken Garing's Intergalactic, which sounds really cool, focusing as it does, on space exploration and more grounded sci-fi.  There's an interview with the two about the book here.

Oni Press

Oni announced new collections for webcomics Double Fine Actions Comics and Diesel Sweeties.  As well, they provided a few more details on some of their ongoing or upcoming projects (including The Sixth Gun planning on going for 50 or so issues and teasing Buzz, a new comic from Ananth Panagariya [of Johnny Wonder] and Tessa Stone [Hanna is Not a Boy's Name]).

Eisners!


Probably the most exciting thing from yesterday was the announcement of 2012's Eisner winners.  There were a ton of deserving creators receiving these amazing awards last night, including Mark Waid taking home three at least partially related to his work on Daredevil.  You should check the whole list yourself, but I'd also like to point out that Roger Langridge's Snarked! took home the "Best Publication for Kids" and Ramón K. Pérez (quite rightfully) got the nod for "Best Penciller / Inker" for his amazing work on Jim Henson's Tale of Sand.


And that's Day 2 for you!  Did I miss anything?  Some gems in there, but a not a whole lot, all things considered.  Perhaps there will be some bigger bombshells coming out tonight?  Only time will tell!  What did you think of SDCC on Friday?
