Good golly, Miss Molly, is it time for Post-Crisis Previews already? Well that suits me just fine, because the second week of June looks to be a good one. The sheer number of amazing books coming out is bordering on the banks of ludicrous, including the likes of a new American Vampire miniseries, the launch of Brian Wood's The Massive, and much, much more. AMERICAN VAMPIRE LORD OF NIGHTMARES #1

Grant: Oh, yes! Now here's the comic I didn't even know I was waiting for! American Vampire is usually a lock when it comes to quality, and if the one other miniseries - Survival of the Fittest with Sean Murphy - is any indication, that holds doubly true for these tie-in books. The fact that this book will be featuring my all-time favourite artist, Dustin Nguyen, after his seemingly too long hiatus from comics, is icing on the cake!

Grant: For all the Snyder love I'm willing to hand out for American Vampire, I can't be quite so forthcoming when it comes to Snyder's current Batman work. While I loved his work on Detective Comics, I haven't been able to feel nearly as strongly for his recent work on Batman since the reboot. While there's definitely been some brilliant story work and the art is top notch, I'm not the biggest fan of what Snyder is doing to Bruce Wayne and his origins. However, despite my complaints, I keep buying the book, so he must be doing something right, right?
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #5

Grant: I still miss Becky Cloonan on this book, but I will freely admit that James Harren is a pretty fine second choice. His work last issue was quite stunning and worked as an excellent compliment for the terrific work that Brian Wood continues to do on this series. Before Wood came to the character, I'd never really read Conan, but I'm definitely glad I'm doing so now. This stuff is great.
DEMON KNIGHTS #10

Grant: While cancelled books are never a great thing, I was glad to see the list of the four that will be biting it in September, because Demon Knights wasn't on the list. This book is easily one of my favourite things to come out of the New 52, because it really couldn't have existed without the relaunch of DC's entire line, but I can't shake the feeling that I'm in the minority with that perspective. The fact is that I just don't hear that much support for Demon Knights, so I'm always a little concerned that it isn't doing all that great. While these worries may be valid, at least DC has given this title the chance to live a little longer, because Paul Cornell, Diogenes Neves, and Oclair Albert are providing for some of the most entertaining comics you can find.
MASSIVE #1

Grant: Finally, a week where I'm buying two books from the same writer from someone other than Scott Snyder or Jeff Lemire. I'm a little tardy to the Brian Wood party, only having really discovered his work within the past year, but I'm already a big fan. As you've seen, I've faithfully followed his work on Conan and I've been waiting patiently for his new ongoing, The Massive, to drop. Well, the wait is over, because The Massive is imminent. Can' wait.
PLANETOID #1

Silas, an ex-soldier turned space pirate, finds himself stranded on a mysterious planet in alien territory. As he explores the long-abandoned industrial ruins of the planet's surface he will have to fend off rogue mechanical creatures, roving cyborg militias, and a hostile alien military with a bounty on his head. Silas will have to rely on resourcefulness and bare-bones survival tactics in order to stay alive and ultimately unlock the secrets of a planet where survival is a luxury and escape an impossibility.
Grant: So this book was miles from being on my radar, until quite recently, but now that it's been drawn to my attention, I'm having a hard time thinking of anything else. If you find yourself with an extra three bucks while in your comic book shop, I urge you to consider giving this book a chance. The concept alone is pretty intriguing, but the previous give the impression that this could be something special.

Grant: So I've been pretty clear on my love for Skullkickers. It's kind of wonderful in most every single way. For the first thirteen issues, it was a book you could depend on for some wacky, fantasy-themed adventure, with lots of violence thrown in for good measure, but with the last issue, it appears that things have changed. The wacky, fantasy violence is still there, but the title suddenly got a lot more depth thrown in with those revelations. It looks like that is continuing with #15, and I, for one, could not be more excited.
SPIDER-MEN #1

Grant: Okay, that solicitation is kind of lackluster when you consider how jam packed with hyperbole comic book solicitations are, but I can't help but be a wee bit interested in this series. I like Peter Parker. I liked what little I saw of Miles Morales, although I was a little off-put by the cost-to-page ratio. That latter issue remains a bit of a problem, but since dropping Amazing Spider-Man, I've been craving some web slingery, and I think this might be the perfect solution. After all, aren't two web heads better than one?
That terrible pun aside, I'm real excited for this week. There are an awful lot of cool looking books coming out, and I want to read them all right now. Unfortunately, I'll have to wait one more day. Hopefully I'll be able to survive the anticipation. Are you as pumped for the coming week as I am? Got some humdinger books coming your way? I certainly hope so.

I share your love for Demon Knights. It took a while to get going, but it's probably the zaniest, strangest thing DC has going. And it's also one of the smarter and more heartfelt comics around as well.
RE: Spider Men, Marvel said they would never cross over the Ultimate line with the main universe, as that would mean they have run out of ideas? So I guess they ran out of ideas, or is Bendis just itchy to have two Spidermen in one book, since you know, he writes every character with the trademark Spidey snark anyway.
@sdelmonte - Agreed with pretty much everything you said.
@anon - I'm with you to a degree, but I think it's too easy right now to point to examples that show Marvel / DC have run out of ideas. Crossing over the Ultimate line? Sure. But what about having the Avengers fight the X-Men for some reason? Resurrecting the Watchmen just because? Or relaunching DCs entire comic book line? It's like shooting fish in a barrel at this point. But, just because an idea is trite, cliché, or ill-advised doesn't necessarily it can't be well executed. It certainly makes proper execution a heck of a lot harder, but it's tough to tell if you don't give it a look.
@anon - Quoting something Joe Q said 10+ years ago (to which he has recently clarified and to some degree retracted)as a sign that Marvel has run out of ideas is, for me, a bit murky, to say the least. Sure lots of ideas get rehashed, but we keep buying. However, there are a lot of new things happening and great rediscoveries occurring everywhere... i.e. Miles Morales, The Defenders, Demon Knights, G.I. Joe, Valiant. Just my two cents.
On paper Spider-Men makes sense. Miles Morales was inspired by Peter Parker's death, and here he can meet his idol. Plus it's the 50 year anniversary of Spider-Man, so Marvel is going to do everything Spider-Man they can imagine. If this is a special occasion that won't be repeated until we have 50 years of Ultimate Spider-Man or 100 years of Marvel Comics I'm cool with it. However if they repeatedly go to this well, then yeah, I think Quesada's quote will ring true.
Not saying they ran out of ideas, just bringing up how they said they would never do the ultimate/616 crossover BECAUSE it would mean they ran out of ideas. I dont think thats the case, but I think that a crossover like this seems a bit on the lazy side.
I just hope they don't play Peter as all shocked and upset that he is dead in another reality. Since comic characters travel to strange alternate realities all the time, so being dead in this reality shouldn't be such an emotional thing for him, and also, he'd be smart enough to know there are an infinite number of alternate realities, and in 99.99999999% of them, Spiderman, and even the whole planet wouldnt exist.
