Post-Crisis Comic Book Previews for 05/09/12

Alright, friends, it's time for our weekly installment of the Post-Crisis Previews!  My haul is a little on the light side this time around, but I'd like to think that it's about quality over quantity.  While whether or not such allegations are true remains to be seen, but while we're waiting to find out, I'd invite you to hit the jump to see my thoughts on some of the upcoming books, including Batman #9, Peter Panzerfaust #4, Punisher #11, and (a few) more!

Grant: As before, I'm no really into the current "Night of the Owls" arc.  I'm only getting this issue because I like when Scott Snyder writes Batman (although I liked his Detective Comics quite a bit more).  On a related note, I'm still mad at DC for joining Marvel in being super lazy when it comes to solicitations.  I'm just saying, assuming that no one is going to pick up your books based on what you're saying about them isn't exactly a good sign, guys.

DEMON KNIGHTS #9

• “THE MURDER OF MERLIN” begins!
• Who has the power to murder Merlin – and what else are they capable of?

Grant: Demon Knights continues to be just fun enough that I can't rationalize not buying it.  The motley crew that Paul Cornell has assembled are providing for some incredibly fun - and rather different - reading from DC, which I cannot say no to.  I'm eager to see how this "Murder of Merlin" storyline plays out, since quite a few of the leads seem to be related to Camelot's resident magic man.  Will be interesting to see how his untimely demise impacts them.

PETER PANZERFAUST #4

“THE GREAT ESCAPE,” Part Four

The road to Paris proves highly dangerous for Peter and the boys and with three new recruits it becomes impossible to hide from the German army. With the city in sight, they must overcome the biggest obstacle to their freedom yet.

Grant: This series has suffered from a few missteps along the way, but the introduction of Wendy at the end of last issue should hopefully be just what the doctor ordered to get things back on the solid track of issue #1.  At least that's what I keep hoping, because the potential of Peter Pan in World War 2 is too good not to deliver on.  You can do it, guys!

PUNISHER #11

• Frank Castle speaks. And Rachel Cole is not going to like what she hears.

Grant: After three issues of Marco Checchetto goodness last month, I'm sad (but not surprised) to find another fill-in artist on the Punisher.  Fortunately, despite the rotating cast of artists, Greg Rucka keeps bringing his A-game, so it's not a huge issue.  On the terrible solicitations front, Marvel somehow manages to make point form solicitations make even less sense here as they fail to put a completely thought after the first bullet and shove in two thoughts after the second one.  Seriously guys, this is not rocket science.  You just need to offer a brief blurb about why your comic happens to be amazing.  I know that this isn't true for some (read: far too many) comics, but you could at least put in the effort, you know?

SKULLKICKERS #14

Grant: Here, on the other hand, is a much better demonstration of solicitation use.  While I admit that it requires a reader to already be following to fully appreciate, but I have been curious as to the reason Baldy has a gun and no one else knows what a gun is.  Also, considering how good every single issue of Skullkickers invariably is, as the reader, I am more than willing to trust the creators that "this is the one [I've] been waiting for".  I can't wait to see whatever secrets they have to share might be.

And so we have another week of me complaining about the low quality of monthly comic book solicitations. Are there others out there who also feel that having actual solicitations - with complete sentences - are kind of a nice thing to have?  Or am I really the only person who is bothered by this?  Help me out, guys, I need to know!
