Post-Crisis Comic Book Previews for 03/28/12

Welcome to your weekly edition of Post-Crisis Previews!  We're on our last week of March, and there's plenty of books coming your way, including the perennially good American Vampire, the lightning quick Flash, and the beginning of what Marvel hopes will be their next big thing - Avengers vs. X-Men #0.  But that's not all!  Hit the jump to get the full list!

AMERICAN VAMPIRE #25

This is it! “The Death Race” comes to a stunning conclusion as we learn the truth about the origin of vampire hunter Travis Kidd. Plus: Some old friends return and a shocking ending that’s not to be missed! 

Grant: I've been enjoying the heck out of this arc.  I keep going back to how bad "Beast in the Cave" was (it was so bad!), but it's because of how good this series had been up until that dud.  Fortunately, as I've said before, Scott Snyder and Raphael Albuquerque are back up to their usual tricks.  Seeing as to which character has already rejoined the land of the (un)living, I have a sneaking suspicion of who these "old friends" might be.  Hopefully I'm right, because their familiar faces would be an excellent addition to the conclusion of what's been a roller coaster of an arc.

ATOMIC ROBO REAL SCIENCE ADVENTURES #1

Grant: O.  M.  G.  How is there a spinoff Atomic Robo series written by Brian Clevinger that looks at all the many other amazing characters he's created over the course of the first six volumes of stories?  This is perhaps the best news I could possibly hear.  Ever.  If this is anything like the main series (and smart money says it should be), I cannot wait to get my hands on this book and devour its sure to be delicious contents.  There has not been a ton of hype leading up to this book's release (I only kind of realized it was actually happening a few weeks ago), but if you can find yourself a copy, I urge you to give it a gander. It should be amazing.

AVENGERS VS. X-MEN #0

Grant: I still think this is a dumb idea that is meant only to sell comic books without any real thought to story or narrative, but I would be remiss in my reviewing duties if I didn't take a gander at the beginnings of what Marvel surely hopes will be the event of the year.  Besides, I might be a little bit interested in what's going to go down.

Maybe.

DAREDEVIL #10

Grant: Last issue left me feeling pretty cold.  It was an all around less exciting, less dynamic, and seemingly less thought out issue of Daredevil.  I'm starting to get the impression that maybe the honeymoon on this title is coming to its end and the shine is coming off, but maybe I'm jumping the gun a little bit there.  Either way, I do hope that Mark Waid and Paolo Rivera will be able to turn this one around.  We'll see how it goes.

FLASH #7

Grant: Speaking of Cold (best segue ever?), Flash hasn't been too hot either (or am I laying it on a little thick?).  I really liked the start to this series, but it feels like Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato can't quite decide what parts of the pre-reboot Flash they want to keep and what parts they want to jettison.  In the interim, we're getting incomplete stories that aren't really satisfying to readers regardless of their familiarity with the Crimson Speedster.  Again, I hope that Manapul and Buccellato can right this ship before things get out of hand.

ROGER LANGRIDGE'S SNARKED! #6

Grant: Speaking of ships (definitely too much), I remain completely head over heels in love with Roger Langridge's Snarked!  This is the type of all-ages' comic that I'm continually calling out for, which is why I try to draw as much attention to this book as I can.  This thing seriously has it all.  Lewis Carroll inspired characters and stories.  Wacky and fun adventures.  And plenty of laughs to go around.  If you're at all interested, I would encourage you to pick up this issue and give it a shot.

SCALPED #57

The stunning final arc of SCALPED continues here with “Trail’s End” part 2. Months have passed on the Rez since the fight between Dash and Shunka, and it seems that peace has finally settled in. But this is life on the Prairie Rose. Peace doesn’t last forever... 

Grant: Jason Aaron and R.M. Guera's Scalped continues to move towards the proverbial finish line, but don't even think that things are slowing down.  We had a bit of a temporal jump last issue, moving us even closer to the end, but it also raised the stakes quite a bit.  Dashiell Bad Horse seems to have finally found a good thing, which means that something bad must be just around the corner.  And this cover doesn't exactly look promising for Carol.  And that's not even taking into account what Red Crow will be getting up to.  This series is so good that it's not even fair for other books out there.

UNWRITTEN #35.5

Grant: Continuing the greatness that is Vertigo, we have our biweekly dose of The Unwritten.  It looks like this will be the last .5 for the foreseeable future, which is a bit of a shame, as those .5ers have often been better than the main series (especially the World War 1 issue from last month).  I love how Mike Carey and Peter Gross have used these extra issues to shed a bit more light onto the amazing world they've crafted, and I'm crazy excited to get a closer look at the inner-workings of the cabal and the Grid.

And with that, we're coming to the end of March, but it's honestly hard to fathom how rich this month has been in terms of comic books.  They're have just been so many good ones.  And then there's Avengers vs. X-Men #0.  All kidding aside, maybe it'll be great.  But even if it isn't, at least there were plenty of other good books to occupy my reading time.
