Some big news from WonderCon was that Carol Danvers will be taking over the role of Captain Marvel, and as such will receive her own title. The comic internet being what it so often is, pundits are already playing the dead pool as to when it will get cancelled. The writer on this project, Kelly Sue DeConnick, threw out this gauntlet in a CBR interview.

No, Kelly. I don't think I will. Here is what I will do for you however, same thing I do for any writer. Writer a good story that I am find interesting and worthy of my $4 and I will buy it.
Love Ms Marvel, and love either her current lightning bolt costume or something like what Moonstone wore when she stole the identity. But this new look is awful. At least its more Ms Marvel though!
Man, I hate Carol Danvers. Her characerization on CW ruined her for me. She was even more of a Nazi than Iron Man, and then got shoehorned right back into the "good guys" side as soon as Osborn took over.
Not that I want to be cynical, but the first instinct that comes to mind when seeing this is that the 'real' reason Danver's inheriting the Captain Marvel name and series is because it's about time for Marvel to get a Captain Marvel book on the shelves in order to keep DC from snatching it away from them.
THAT SAID, I'll at least try to give the book a look, but no promises on whether I'll buy it or not (long term, at least) till I can get an impression of what's actually going to be in it.
Not a fan of the new look, especially that awful haircut. Don't mind if she cut it shorter but that look is just plain awful or if I could quote Ryan Reynolds for a moment
"Your hair looks....ridiculous"
It's hard not to applaud her for the sentiment, but as Brandon puts it at the top of the comments, this doesn't need to be a politicized issue. If the art and story are there, most likely the readers will be there. But as this is Marvel, no doubt they will find a way to screw it up, and then it will become a politicized issue over which the blogosphere will wring their hands.
