Post-Crisis Comic Book Previews for 02/08/12

Welcome to your weekly dose of Post-Crisis Previews!  We've got a doozy of post this time around, with the look ahead being rife with amazing looking books.  We've got the conclusion of the latest Atomic Robo arc, the conclusion of the bone chilling Severed, the beginning of the Adventure Time comic book, and lots, lots more.  Hit the jump to check it all out!

ADVENTURE TIME #1

Grant: Is it too early to call a book of the week?  I will confess to not really knowing anything about Adventure Time, having never seen the show or really heard about it before Boom! announced that they'd be releasing a comic book adaptation.  In fact, I didn't really pay it any mind until I realized that Ryan North of Dinosaur Comics fame was writing it.  That made me take pause.  I love Ryan North.  Discovering that he was actually writing some print comics instantly got me excited for it, actual content be damned.  So I still haven't seen Adventure Time, but I could care less.  With Ryan North at the helm, I'm hard pressed to imagine a better book on the shelves this week.

ATOMIC ROBO GHOST OF STATION X #5

We'd like to apologize for the content of the four previous solicitations. They were unnecessarily antagonistic. Let's just agree that people who aren't buying this comic are to be pitied like the miserable wastes of skin they are. In this, the concluding issue of The Ghost Of Station X, Atomic Robo finally comes face to face with the brains behind the plot to destroy him. The twist? Whether or not he lives, humanity dies. A fun comic book for all ages!

Grant: Okay, I can maybe imagine one book that might give Adventure Time a run for its money.  The much anticipated (on my part) conclusion to the sixth volume of Atomic Robo dropping tomorrow is a bit of a game changer.  If it's anywhere near as good as pretty much everything else Brian Clevinger and Scott Wegner have done together (including issues #1 through #4 of this very volume), it might be a little early to be calling book of the week.  Maybe.

BATWOMAN #6

Artist Amy Reeder and inker Richard Friend join the Batwoman team with this new arc, as the epic “To Drown the World” begins!

Grant: Oh, right.  This book is coming out too.  Okay, so Batwoman's release makes the book of the week an even harder race to predict.  I've been loving every issue of this amazing series, but I do wonder how the title will look without J.H. Williams III on art duties.  Considering how good the writing has been and the fact that Amy Reeder is coming in to cover, I'm not terribly worried, but we shall see how it all works out.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #1

Grant: Speaking of book of the week candidates...  You've read the Fireside Chat with Brian Wood, now's your chance to get your hands on one of those most excellent sound books.  I've never read any Conan, but I'm pretty pumped to give this guy a gander.

DEMON KNIGHTS #6

Bodies are piling up, and one of their own has switched sides to lead the charge to destroy them! So how will the Knights turn the tide of battle? It all comes down to the deal Etrigan and Jason Blood have made. But can a demon truly be trusted under fire, or would he rather watch you burn? 

Grant: I found the last issue to be a little slow and frustrating, seeing as the villains spent the whole time trying to trick the heroes to switch sides, only to have the one person they didn't approach switch sides for no reason.  That being said, this cover is more than enough to win me back over.  Exoristos has been a wonderful addition to the DC Universe, and her headbutting a triceratops is the best thing ever.  Can't wait.

FRANKENSTEIN AGENT OF S.H.A.D.E. #6

Frankenstein and The Commandos head back to Vietnam to take out a rogue super human whom Frankenstein fought beside back in 1969! Meanwhile, The Humanids stage a revolt in The Ant Farm, and Nina and Lady Frankenstein are all that stands between them and total chaos. But they soon discover other deep, dark secrets hidden in S.H.A.D.E.City. 

Grant: I'm still not in love with this book, and while I recognize that that should be setting off warning bells for me, I'm hoping against hope that having all of the creature commandos back in action will improve my feeling towards the title.  That team aspect is what I loved the most about Lemire's summer Flashpoint Frankenstein book, so maybe he can rediscover some of that chemistry.  We shall see.

LOBSTER JOHNSON: THE BURNING HAND #2

With a city swamped in dead gangsters with claws branded into their foreheads, mob boss Arnie Wald seeks the assistance of a deadly mystic and her strange partner to take down the vigilante known as Lobster Johnson! 

Grant: The first issue was a tad low key, taking its time to properly set  up all of the things that the reader needs to know, so I'm looking forward to this issue to really dive into the problems at hand and see things heat up.  We only got a few glimpses of the Lobster last time around; I can't wait to see him get some more page time.

SEVERED #7

In 1916, a boy runs away from home in search of his father. But along the way he meets a salesman with sharp teeth and a hunger for flesh. SCOTT SNYDER (AMERICAN VAMPIRE, BATMAN, SWAMP THING), SCOTT TUFT and ATTILA FUTAKI (NYT Best-Selling-Artist: PERCY JACKSON) comes the most terrifying horror series of the year. Be there for the thrilling conclusion. 

Grant: These solicitations continue to be meaningless, regurgitating pretty much the same information month in and month out, but happily for readers, the book proper is more or less out of this world.  Every single issue has been slowly building up to this conclusion.  The pacing has been delicious, providing some genuinely scary moments along the way.  I can't wait to see how this all plays out.

UNWRITTEN #34

Tom has fought his way through to the holy of holies, where the Cabal’s high council sits in judgment over the world. But stripped of his magical powers, he’s just one man against a vast machine – and against the even more sinister power that lurks behind it. 

Grant: Mike Carey and Peter Gross are kind of geniuses.  As I said in the reviews two weeks' back, issue #33.5 was brilliant.  Thankfully, the main series has been just as good.  With all that's been happening, the conclusion to Tom Taylor and the War of the Words is going to be electrifying.





Oh man, oh man.  I cannot wait to get my hands on all of these wonderful books.  They all look absolutely fantastic!  How's by you this week?  You getting on board with Adventure Time?  Or do you have other titles that are of more interest?
