If you haven’t visited the new art challenge site,
Supervillain Showdown, then you’re in for a treat. Unlike other sketch blogs, or art blogs that choose a character a week, this site is a bit more detailed and structured.
Scott Kowalchuk, who draws the beautiful
The Intrepids, and
Dennis Culver, an up and coming artist through Oni, choose an established villain and then redesign them. The site is new, they’re only on their fifth choice, so you can get in early and not miss a beat. These redesigns are so much damn fun, and very well put together, you’ll be happy every time some art lands in your feed. Hit the jump to see some examples.
The first choice was
The Fly:
Dennis Culver went this way:
And Scott Kowalchuk went that way:
Instantly, you can see a difference between these artists but high quality from both. Now let's look at their second choice, the
Polka Dot Man:
Culver's version:
And Kowalchuk's very cool version:
After only two choices, it's hard to choose who is the victor in these challenges. The next choice was
Doctor Cyber:
Culver gives us this:
Kowalchuk goes another way:
The last completed challenge was
Brain Storm:
Culver drops this:
Kowalchuck responds with this:
Now, the latest challenge is
Kang The Conqueror. I cannot wait to see what they do with this guy.
Conclusion
What are your thoughts on
Supervillain Showdown? I think it's not only full of excellent art but it's an overall very cool idea. I urge everyone to slap it into their reader feed, or however you keep up with the sites you follow. Which redesign is your favourite, and why? I have to say I'm leaning towards...either Culver's The Fly or Kowalchuck's Polka Dot Man. What villain would you like to see them do next?

Will definitely give it a try, looks like an awesome idea!
Wow! That's a great idea...very nicely executed too. Thanks for the heads up.
Those are waaaaay better than the originals!
Great idea. I'd love to see what they'd do with guys like X-Men's Beak or Choir or guys like Calendar Man.
