Eisner Award Nominations for 2011 - Best Penciller-Inker or Penciller-Inker Team

The Eisner nominations are out for the 2011 awards and they are certainly interesting. Where 2010 seemed to have plenty of Big Two top talent this year is much more independent. Throughout this week, we’re going to discuss each of the main sections of the awards, offer some suggestions for those who missed out, and then open up the floor for you all to have your say. Right now we’re looking at Best Penciller-Inker or Penciller-Inker Team. Let's get into it.

Best Penciller-Inker or Penciller-Inker Team

Richard Corben, Hellboy (Dark Horse)
Stephen DeStefano, Lucky in Love Book One: A Poor Man’s Story (Fantagraphics)
Rob Guillory, Chew (Image)
Gabriel Rodriguez, Locke & Key (IDW)
Skottie Young, The Marvelous Land of Oz (Marvel)

What They Got Right

I love Rob Guillory’s work on Chew so very much. The man deserves this award because his line choices are superb, his cast acting is phenomenal, and his dedication to be an independent stylist is commendable. Though, these artists can all have the same said about them. It’s a strong field but I stand by Guillory for the top spot. A large part of the reason Chew is so successful is the art. And the writing. And the colours.

What They Got Wrong

The rest of this line up is all solid. Great choices abound and that’s nice. So any omissions come down to personal flavour, I think. It would have been good to see someone like Rafael Albuquerque get a nod, or Francesco Francavilla. Both of these fine gentlemen are doing things on the page that regularly excite and please the audience.

Conclusion

These are just some thoughts on the Eisner nominations for this category. We’d love to hear what you think so please add any thoughts or comments down below.

Great, great set of nominees this year, and they all deserve it.

Apart from Albequerque and Francavilla, would have also liked to see Jock and Doug Mahnke (with his army of inkers) to have gotten nominated
