Eisner Award Nominations for 2011 - Best Short Story

The Eisner nominations are out for the 2011 awards and they are certainly interesting. Where 2010 seemed to have plenty of Big Two top talent this year is much more independent. Throughout this week, we’re going to discuss each of the main sections of the awards, offer some suggestions for those who missed out, and then open up the floor for you all to have your say. Right now we’re looking at Best Short Story. Let's get into it.

Best Short Story

“Bart on the Fourth of July,” by Peter Kuper, in Bart Simpson #54 (Bongo)
“Batman, in Trick for the Scarecrow,” by Billy Tucci, in DCU Halloween Special 2010 (DC)
“Cinderella,” by Nick Spencer and Rodin Esquejo, in Fractured Fables (Silverline Books/Image)
“Hamburgers for One,” by Frank Stockton, in Popgun vol. 4 (Image)
“Little Red Riding Hood,” by Bryan Talbot and Camilla d’Errico, in Fractured Fables (Silverline Books/Image)
“Post Mortem,” by Greg Rucka and Michael Lark, in I Am an Avenger #2 (Marvel)

What They Got Right

Man, I haven’t read a single one of these. I guess that means I have nothing to say. And manufacturing anything that was generally specific but pithy would just be poor journalism. Why don’t you tell me why these tales are right.

What They Got Wrong

Rafael Grampa’s Wolverine V Deadpool in Strange Tales II #1. Boom, there’s your winner. How this isn’t on the list baffles me, it was one of the greatest slices of comics in the past year. It was a gorgeously crafted tale of violence and desire and it might just be the perfect Wolverine tale. Ever. If you haven’t read it then check it out. The HC dropped last week, well worth it as the entire collection showcases a little bit of everything and near complete awesome quality. The quote on the back says as much, too :)

CBGB had some good tales, especially Kieron Gillen’s ‘A NYC Punk Carol’ which looked at the history of the scene through an experimental narrative flow, and Kelly Sue DeConnick’s ‘Count 5 or 6’ which was all about looking back on the scene and realising where you are today.

Conclusion

These are just some thoughts on the Eisner nominations for this category. We’d love to hear what you think so please add any thoughts or comments down below.
