The Eisner nominations are out for the 2011 awards and they are certainly interesting. Where 2010 seemed to have plenty of Big Two top talent this year is much more independent. Throughout this week, we’re going to discuss each of the main sections of the awards, offer some suggestions for those who missed out, and then open up the floor for you all to have your say. Right now we’re looking at Best New Series. Let's get into it.

What They Got Right
Of course, I’m happy about American Vampire’s inclusion here. And of course I think it should win. A historical vampire comic that equal parts erudition of words and brutally bestial violence with some of the best art of the entire year. This comic is sublime and is certainly above the competition.
I can see many wanting Morning Glories to take this one out. That could be good. But Marineman shocks me because there have only been a handful of issues.
What They Got Wrong
No love for Uncanny X-Force? I state this as a question because I’m not completely guaranteed within myself that it deserves to be among these titles but if Superboy can make it then surely the most fun violent anti-90s comic can also be celebrated for being something smarter than the average bear.

I dropped Superboy. It's not bad but it's also not the sort of book that screams "Read ME!" every month.

iZombie and Superboy are good, fun comics. They are not, thus far, great comics. Uncanny X-Force certainly deserved a spot.
Out of the Eisner nominated, my vote would go to Marineman. Great fun, every month.
not gonna lie, I'm totally down with Marineman winning out over the others here too. I mean I love American Vampire and ADORE iZombie, but Marineman has been one of the most rewarding and dense series I've ever read. Admittedly the dense can be a bad point, but this is totally one of those titles that pays off hugely for having the patience to sit down and read it
