Crisis on Infinite Arts - Clayton Crain's Venom vs Carnage

Carnage returned this week (it was actually good!  You should check it out.) under the creative team of Zeb Wells and Clayton Crain.  It got me thinking of older Carnage appearances and the art was familiar to me, but I couldn't place it.  I was under the impression Crain had only recently entered the comic field, so colour me surprised when I found out that Crain had actually drawn Carnage before and was a book I actually own - Venom vs Carnage, to which the above image was a cover to the first issue.

That miniseries was actually written by Peter Milligan with Crain on art for those wondering.  Many skipped over it or completely ignored it as it came out around the downturn of the symbiote craze that swept the 90s and most didn't care anymore.  So, to coincide with Carnage's return, I thought the above image would make a good Crisis on Infinite Arts post.

Read that mini ages ago, it wasn't very well, had obvious continuity issues like Black Cat not knowing who Venom is, but the art was awesome! :D

Don't know if you've read Milligan's follow-up mini Toxin? It's really good. :)

When I byrned Carnage #1, I knew the art looked familiar, what with the "photorealistic" feel to it. Is Venom vs. Carnage the one where Carnage gives birth to the Toxin symbiote?

Yeah, that was plagued with continuity errors that no one cared for anymore. A previous Spider-man storyline had Venom "absorb" the Carnage symbiote, but oh, well.

Milligan wrote this? I don't think I ever read it, but I kind of want to now.

@matt if you do (and you should) give his follow-up Toxin mini a stab too, it's probably one of the most underrated titles in recent history

Man, I really dislike Crain's style. I know that he's talented, but that weird "plastic" look just isn't for me.

I think the art showcase here benefits from the lack of backgrounds. His backgrounds are very dark, from what I remember.

Yeah, VEnom VS Carnage is about Carnage's birth. Toxin is about the baby and Toxin is, probably, the best use of the simbiote concept ever. Too bad Toxin never appeared again. :(

You don't get to decide what's an answer or not. It may be an answer you don't deem satisfactory, but it's an answer nonetheless. ;)

Because, Toxin is awesome. :P He's like a baby with a enormous amount of power and a dangerously narrow wiew of the world and good/evil.
