Post-Crisis Comic Book Previews for 04/28/10

Who's this Kirk Warren guy doing the previews?  Does he still work here?  Why, yes, yes I do.  I've been having some health problems the last couple weeks and every time I thought I could come back, something else went wrong.  Should be *knock on wood* back on some kind of a regular schedule again starting though with this edition of the Post-Crisis Previews, Ryan Schrodt's and my weekly column that spotlights each of our pull lists for the given week with thoughts and commentary on each of the books we'll be buying.  Feel free to comment on our picks or let us know if we are missing out on something that isn't listed (or maybe we missed while writing up our thoughts).  Hit the jump for the full previews!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #629

Kirk: Unlike some of the other books set for release this week, Amazing Spider-Man is one of the few I missed a chapter of during my brief absence due to its weekly-esque schedule. I'll be picking up the previous chapter at the shop this week as well, so probably do a double review of both.

FANTASTIC FOUR #578

Death, life and resurrection...Annihilus is back and hungry for revenge!

Ryan: Annihilus is back, eh? I wonder how that is going to work after his death in the original Annihilation miniseries. More importantly, though, I wonder if Hickman is going to adhere to the current continuity where Blaastar is the king of Annihilus’s stomping grounds, the Negative Zone. Either way, if past issues are any indication, this should be a heck of an issue.

Kirk: He was "back" at the end of Annihilation and in various cameos since as a baby, Ryan.  This could be similar to the recent Inhumans issue, which sort of featured Black Bolt, despite his supposed death in War of Kings. I, too, am curious as to how Hickman will address the current cosmic status quo with this issue, if he does indeed feature the same Annihilus from those storylines.

GOTHAM CITY SIRENS #11

As Gotham City swirls in a maelstrom of evil and villainy, three of the most unlikely candidates – Catwoman, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn – step forward to bring some light to the situation. But will their efforts enough to stem the tide of madness and mayhem?

Ryan: Since this series debuted it really hasn’t had much of a direction. We’ve had some great stories and some excellent character work by Paul Dini, but there hasn’t been a focus for the book other than the characters it follows. It looks like we could start seeing that with this issue as the Sirens start becoming heroes (I can’t imagine that working out well for them).

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #47

A BRIGHTEST DAY tie-in! As BRIGHTEST DAY begins, Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner, along with the rest of the Green Lantern Corps, attempt to pick up the pieces from the horrific events of BLACKEST NIGHT and take a long hard look at how the Corps is run now that major revelations have come to light. Who survived (and what the Alpha Lanterns have in store for them) is only one of the many new questions that the Green Lanterns will have to answer on the difficult and dangerous road ahead.

Ryan: I really have no idea what to expect from this issue. Any fallout issue from a major event is always a bit awkward, but when you have a lame duck creative team at the helm, it can only be weirder. I just hope that Tomasi and Gleason come up with something more interesting than the humdrum post-Blackest Night regular Green Lantern issue last week.

Kirk: Haven't read Brightest Day yet, so not sure what to expect on this.  Tomasi and Gleason are golden though, so I imagine this will be excellent. 

JUSTICE LEAGUE: RISE OF ARSENAL #2

Spinning out of CRY FOR JUSTICE, ""The Rise and Fall"" continues here as Roy Harper discovers that getting a prosthetic arm doesn't make him whole again, he's also forced to deal with Green Arrow's shocking revelation from JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE RISE AND FALL SPECIAL #1. And sparks fly when Roy's old flame Cheshire shows up...to kill him!

Ryan: Given how much I hate the premise behind this miniseries’s plot, I was surprised by how much I dug the first issue as JT Krul did a phenomenal job of hitting all of the right emotional notes with the very broken Roy Harper. Last issue saw him turning back to drugs and this issue promises the return of Chesire, meaning that things are just going from bad to worse for Roy. I look forward to seeing how Krul gets him out of this very dark place.

SIEGE: SECRET WARRIORS #1

Nick Fury’s plans are revealed in Siege: Secret Warriors, from the team of Jonathan Hickman and Alessandro Vitti!

Kirk: What plans are revealed?  Siege related plans or actual Secret Warriors/Hydra related plans?  I'm picking this up on the strength of Hickman's writing and with the hopes it will be more Secret Warriors related than simply 'Siege tie-in #1589'.  

SECRET WARRIORS #15

It's Sleepless in Seattle meets Full Metal Jacket. It's part five of WAKE THE BEAST - featuring the secret history of Viper!

Kirk: Secret Warriors has been really hitting its stride of late and many of the plots and subplots are coming together nicely.  Looking forward to this one.

STAR WARS: LEGACY #47

The Sith poison the waters of the ocean planet of Dac in an effort to wipe out every living thing—but Admiral Gar Stazi isn't ready to abandon the native Mon Calamari without an attempt at evacuation. Time is against him, and securing the assistance of his new Imperial allies will decide whether this rescue is a success...or a suicide!"

Ryan: I can’t say that I have been the biggest fan of the Mon Calamari storyline in this series, but with only a handful of issues before the series’ conclusion, I suspect that John Ostrander will pack way more than this plot into the issue. I’ve been really impressed with how much Ostrander can stuff into the confines of an issue, so I can’t imagine he won’t squeeze something I’d be more interested in into this issue.

TEEN TITANS #82

Now that Superboy is reunited with the Teen Titans, Wonder Girl's discovering what having her boyfriend around all the time means — and it's not all good.

Ryan: If you’ve been following my Comic Book Review Power Rankings recently, I’m sure you already know my dilemma on this one. Henderson is perhaps the single worst writer in the history of DC Comics, but Sean McKeever and Yildiray Cinar have been absolutely golden on the backup. I really want to say that I’ll be strong enough to drop this series because Henderson is so horrible, but the McKeever/Cinar goodness might overpower me once again.

THOR #609

SIEGE BLOCKBUSTER TIE-IN!! The Siege brings Ragnarok to Asgard! The Shining City of Thor and his brothers in arms faces destruction on the greatest scale it’s ever suffered, at the hands of Norman Osborn and his Dark Avengers. But the Norse heroes have bigger problems, when THOR fights THOR! The evil Thor clone has come to kill the God of Thunder and take his place. Even if Asgard survives the Siege…will Thor survive Ragnarok?! 

Kirk: I'll hopefully have the Loki Siege tie-in to go along with this one this week.  Not sure if they are related or not, but Gillen wrote both and both are Thor/Siege related, so I'm guessing they're somewhat related.  Either way, I'm still enjoying these issues of Thor.  Gillen has a good grasp of the character and works well within the Siege framework.

X-FORCE #26

As the X-Men make their desperate attempt to get Hope to Utopia, the battle will cost them one of their own. Nothing will ever be the same.

Ryan: I’m assuming that the “one of their own” that the X-Men lose here isn’t referring to the death of Ariel last issue. After all, few readers seemed to even know who she was, so I can’t imagine “nothing will ever be the same” after she dies.

My guess? Nightcrawler bites the big on here, which will be a major death for the X-Men and a major disappointment for the character’s fans (like me). Still, though, if there is any X-writers I want at the helm of one of my favorite character’s deaths, I want it to be Yost and Kyle. They certainly have enough experience killing mutants after their stellar run on New X-Men!
