Post-Crisis Comic Book Previews for 04/28/10

Who's this Kirk Warren guy doing the previews?  Does he still work here?  Why, yes, yes I do.  I've been having some health problems the last couple weeks and every time I thought I could come back, something else went wrong.  Should be *knock on wood* back on some kind of a regular schedule again starting though with this edition of the Post-Crisis Previews, Ryan Schrodt's and my weekly column that spotlights each of our pull lists for the given week with thoughts and commentary on each of the books we'll be buying.  Feel free to comment on our picks or let us know if we are missing out on something that isn't listed (or maybe we missed while writing up our thoughts).  Hit the jump for the full previews!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #629
Written by Roger Stern
Art by Lee Weeks

“SOMETHING CAN STOP THE JUGGERNAUT, PART 3" Spider-Man and Juggernaut are trapped in an unearthly realm by a being of mind-bending power. But who is their tormentor? What's his connection with Spider-Man? And why does he hate the Juggernaut? All is revealed in a final showdown that threatens to shake Manhattan to its very foundations -- and brings the Spider-Man/Juggernaut Trilogy to a fateful conclusion! Whatever else you do this week, you dare not miss "With Greater Power…!" It's Marvel History-in-the-Making by Stern & Weeks! Plus, a prelude to the Return of the Lizard by Zeb Wells and Chris Bachalo.

Kirk: Unlike some of the other books set for release this week, Amazing Spider-Man is one of the few I missed a chapter of during my brief absence due to its weekly-esque schedule. I'll be picking up the previous chapter at the shop this week as well, so probably do a double review of both.

FANTASTIC FOUR #578
Written by Jonathan Hickman
Art by Dale Eaglesham

Death, life and resurrection...Annihilus is back and hungry for revenge!

Ryan: Annihilus is back, eh? I wonder how that is going to work after his death in the original Annihilation miniseries. More importantly, though, I wonder if Hickman is going to adhere to the current continuity where Blaastar is the king of Annihilus’s stomping grounds, the Negative Zone. Either way, if past issues are any indication, this should be a heck of an issue.

Kirk: He was "back" at the end of Annihilation and in various cameos since as a baby, Ryan.  This could be similar to the recent Inhumans issue, which sort of featured Black Bolt, despite his supposed death in War of Kings. I, too, am curious as to how Hickman will address the current cosmic status quo with this issue, if he does indeed feature the same Annihilus from those storylines.

GOTHAM CITY SIRENS #11
Written by Paul Dini
Art by Guillem March

As Gotham City swirls in a maelstrom of evil and villainy, three of the most unlikely candidates – Catwoman, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn – step forward to bring some light to the situation. But will their efforts enough to stem the tide of madness and mayhem?

Ryan: Since this series debuted it really hasn’t had much of a direction. We’ve had some great stories and some excellent character work by Paul Dini, but there hasn’t been a focus for the book other than the characters it follows. It looks like we could start seeing that with this issue as the Sirens start becoming heroes (I can’t imagine that working out well for them).

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #47
Written by Peter Tomasi
Art by Pat Gleason

A BRIGHTEST DAY tie-in! As BRIGHTEST DAY begins, Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner, along with the rest of the Green Lantern Corps, attempt to pick up the pieces from the horrific events of BLACKEST NIGHT and take a long hard look at how the Corps is run now that major revelations have come to light. Who survived (and what the Alpha Lanterns have in store for them) is only one of the many new questions that the Green Lanterns will have to answer on the difficult and dangerous road ahead.

Ryan: I really have no idea what to expect from this issue. Any fallout issue from a major event is always a bit awkward, but when you have a lame duck creative team at the helm, it can only be weirder. I just hope that Tomasi and Gleason come up with something more interesting than the humdrum post-Blackest Night regular Green Lantern issue last week.

Kirk: Haven't read Brightest Day yet, so not sure what to expect on this.  Tomasi and Gleason are golden though, so I imagine this will be excellent.

JUSTICE LEAGUE: RISE OF ARSENAL #2
Written by JT Krul
Art by Geraldo Borges

Spinning out of CRY FOR JUSTICE, ""The Rise and Fall"" continues here as Roy Harper discovers that getting a prosthetic arm doesn't make him whole again, he's also forced to deal with Green Arrow's shocking revelation from JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE RISE AND FALL SPECIAL #1. And sparks fly when Roy's old flame Cheshire shows up...to kill him!

Ryan: Given how much I hate the premise behind this miniseries’s plot, I was surprised by how much I dug the first issue as JT Krul did a phenomenal job of hitting all of the right emotional notes with the very broken Roy Harper. Last issue saw him turning back to drugs and this issue promises the return of Chesire, meaning that things are just going from bad to worse for Roy. I look forward to seeing how Krul gets him out of this very dark place.

SIEGE: SECRET WARRIORS #1
Written by Jonathan Hickman
Art by Alessandro Vitti

Nick Fury’s plans are revealed in Siege: Secret Warriors, from the team of Jonathan Hickman and Alessandro Vitti!

Kirk: What plans are revealed?  Siege related plans or actual Secret Warriors/Hydra related plans?  I'm picking this up on the strength of Hickman's writing and with the hopes it will be more Secret Warriors related than simply 'Siege tie-in #1589'.

SECRET WARRIORS #15
Written by Jonathan Hickman
Art by Stefano Caselli

Nick Fury comes face-to-face with his greatest betrayal in this all-important issue of Secret Warriors. Break-ups, hook-ups and more! It's Sex and the City meets Reservoir Dogs. It's Sleepless in Seattle meets Full Metal Jacket. It's part five of WAKE THE BEAST - featuring the secret history of Viper!

Kirk: Secret Warriors has been really hitting its stride of late and many of the plots and subplots are coming together nicely.  Looking forward to this one.

STAR WARS: LEGACY #47
Written by John Ostrander
Artist Jan Duursema

The Sith poison the waters of the ocean planet of Dac in an effort to wipe out every living thing—but Admiral Gar Stazi isn't ready to abandon the native Mon Calamari without an attempt at evacuation. Time is against him, and securing the assistance of his new Imperial allies will decide whether this rescue is a success...or a suicide!"

Ryan: I can’t say that I have been the biggest fan of the Mon Calamari storyline in this series, but with only a handful of issues before the series’ conclusion, I suspect that John Ostrander will pack way more than this plot into the issue. I’ve been really impressed with how much Ostrander can stuff into the confines of an issue, so I can’t imagine he won’t squeeze something I’d be more interested in into this issue.

TEEN TITANS #82
Written by Felicia Henderson and Sean McKeever
Art by Joe Bennett and Yildiray Cinar

Now that Superboy is reunited with the Teen Titans, Wonder Girl's discovering what having her boyfriend around all the time means — and it's not all good.

Ryan: If you’ve been following my Comic Book Review Power Rankings recently, I’m sure you already know my dilemma on this one. Henderson is perhaps the single worst writer in the history of DC Comics, but Sean McKeever and Yildiray Cinar have been absolutely golden on the backup. I really want to say that I’ll be strong enough to drop this series because Henderson is so horrible, but the McKeever/Cinar goodness might overpower me once again.

THOR #609
Written by Kieron Gillen
Art by Billy Tan

SIEGE BLOCKBUSTER TIE-IN!! The Siege brings Ragnarok to Asgard! The Shining City of Thor and his brothers in arms faces destruction on the greatest scale it’s ever suffered, at the hands of Norman Osborn and his Dark Avengers. But the Norse heroes have bigger problems, when THOR fights THOR! The evil Thor clone has come to kill the God of Thunder and take his place. Even if Asgard survives the Siege…will Thor survive Ragnarok?!

Kirk: I'll hopefully have the Loki Siege tie-in to go along with this one this week.  Not sure if they are related or not, but Gillen wrote both and both are Thor/Siege related, so I'm guessing they're somewhat related.  Either way, I'm still enjoying these issues of Thor.  Gillen has a good grasp of the character and works well within the Siege framework.

X-FORCE #26
Written by Chris Yost and Craig Kyle
Art by Mike Choi

As the X-Men make their desperate attempt to get Hope to Utopia, the battle will cost them one of their own. Nothing will ever be the same.

Ryan: I’m assuming that the “one of their own” that the X-Men lose here isn’t referring to the death of Ariel last issue. After all, few readers seemed to even know who she was, so I can’t imagine “nothing will ever be the same” after she dies.

My guess? Nightcrawler bites the big on here, which will be a major death for the X-Men and a major disappointment for the character’s fans (like me). Still, though, if there is any X-writers I want at the helm of one of my favorite character’s deaths, I want it to be Yost and Kyle. They certainly have enough experience killing mutants after their stellar run on New X-Men!

I had no idea Legacy was ending with #50. Thats pretty depressing. Its an inconsistent series but I love it.

I'll be getting New & Mighty Avengers, Siege: Secret Warriors & Regular Secret Warriors, Thor, and Thunderbolts.

From Marvel; Captain America, Fantastic Four, Invincible Iron Man, and Secret Warriors. I'm not picking up the Siege tie-ins. I still haven't picked up Thor.

Only picking up from GLC from DC. I've dropped Detective since Batwoman ended there. I'm kind of skipping out on long standing Bat Titles until Morrison returns to the main title.

That Action Comics cover has to win cover of the week. It's amazing.

It will be interesting to see how well stories in GL and GLC make sense (or don't) with me not reading Brighest Night. It would be a shame if I had to drop those two books because I wasn't picking up the third.

Walking Dead after a two month absense is HUGE this week.

I'm curious about Last American Crime and Invincible Iron Man.

Scalped and SW Legacy are staples this week. I'm pissed about Legacy ending. It just doesnt make sense to me.

Shaping up to be a great week.

Welcome back Kirk! It has truly been a while.

Last Days of American Crime is definitely what I'm most interested in this week, seems like it has been forever since the last installment. Stuff of Legend is already being collected in a trade too, curious since it only has two issue out.

Fantastic Four shall continue its reliable streak. On the fence for Iron Man. I want more science awesome, but the phrase "part one of eight" screams trade wait.

Glad to have you back Kirk and I hope that you get all the way better soon. The Loki Siege issue was awesome, and judging by your past reviews of Gillen's work I think you'll really dig it, I'd put it up there with his Ares mini.

Forgot to say welcome back Kirk :)

Welcome Back Boss.....

LOL gonna be a Hickman heavy week for me....

I wonder if you are a young hero and you get invited to the Titans, Legion, or X-Men at this point...why would you accept?

CANNON....FODDER....

I wonder if Arsenal takes place before or after the current Secret Six arc. Bad time to be a child of Cheshires in the DCU.

Personally I think JT Krul is proving to be just as awful a writer as Felicia Henderson, plus he has all of the previous awful Aspen comics experience behind him too.

Yost and Kyle seem to be decent writers, but the whole ultra violent massive death stuff they've been doing...oh since they started at Marvel is getting old. How about a little less death and maiming in our X-Books? Now they aren't just killing newer or obscure characters, but longstanding fan favorites as well?

Nick Fury's big betrayal likely being the lame retconning of the Contessa is less than thrilling.

I am suspecting that Hickman will be leading whatever happens with the Cosmic stuff post-Thanos. His FF run so far seems more like setup for future storylines than a focused story itself. And despite how good their stuff is, Abnett/Lanning have exactly been stellar in the sales department.

That Fantastic Four cover is DROOL! (It HAS To be cover of the week! Or at least contender!)

I'm really disappointed in the recent announcement of Secret Warriors ending around 27-28; especially after Hickman originally stated he had worked out a storyline til at least 60. Perhaps it isn't selling as well as it used to? Or his new SHIELD book will cover too much of the same content?

Ethereal said...

It was a book that came out of Dark Reign. I don't think Shield is going to cover the same content. It's going to be unfortunate if Marvel doesn't have a book following Nick Fury and his little band of kids.

Shame to hear Secret Warriors is ending. Hopfully some of content will roll into Sheil. If only Marvel would run titles like this in a similar way to Vertigo. Y: The Last Man had an ending. It would be nice to see some of these great titles be treated as well at Marvel. istead the just throw **** at the wall and see what stick. Maybe that's what happens at there "big summits".

From what Hickman says, he has pretty solid creative control over Secret Avengers and he's cut the issues shorter because now that he's actually writing it he's finding out just how the pacing is going. He's not losing much story, just telling it in a different way. He also says he doesn't want to be stuck to Secret Warriors for the next 5-6 years when there's other stuff he'd like to write, and will most likely be given the chance. I think, from his intentions, that he'll wrap it up quite nicely.

I think Marvel are doing their best to compete with Vertigo in some areas, and secret Warriors, Shield, are just some examples, not to mention the Icon imprint, but more on that later.

I'm glad you guys are excited about Last Days of American Crime, because you are not going to believe what we have an advance review of. Check the main site, it's already up there.

And yes, it HAS been forever. I knew the book was supposed to ship on a bi-monthly schedule, but I checked the last issue came out in December. That is a lot of time!
