Marvel vs Capcom 2 was one of the greatest comic book related video games ever and, 10 years later, is still looked upon fondly by fighting game and comic fans alike.
Last week, the developer, Capcom, held their annual Captivate news event in Hawaii and rumours ran wild about a new Marvel vs Capcom game when a Marvel employee at the event made it known he was in Hawaii at the time and had big news that he'd share with everyone a week later due to a week long news embargo.
Well, it's one week later and, if you haven't guessed by the title of this post, Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds was announced. What we know, early video and some screen shots after the jump.
The Game
Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds will be similar to Street Fighter 4's aesthetics with 3D characters fighting on a 2D background. Details are scarce on the exact gameplay, but expect it to follow closely to the classic Marvel vs Capcom 2 and the more recent Tatsunoko vs Capcom for the Wii. What this means is we'll be seeing teams of characters, easy to play, but difficult to master gameplay and big combos with lots of flashy supers from our favourite characters from Marvel and Capcom.
The release date for the game is set for a tentative Spring 2011, so don't get too excited or expect it for this Christmas or anything.
Of note, the designers were quoted as saying the game would look like a "living comic book" and feature a "deep story". Now, I take all fighting game stories with a grain of salt, especially crossover stories, so "deep story" will most likely end up being a euphenism for having a story as opposed to a good or deep one.
The Characters
The above photo is a list of confirmed characters as of right now. Considering MvC2 featured 50+ characters from both Marvel and Capcom, the above photo leaves a lot to be desired. Capcom states that they are shooting for around 30 characters, but more could be added with downloadable content.
Confirmed Characters - Morrigan (Capcom - Darkstalkers series), Chris Redfield (Capcom - Resident Evil series), Iron Man, Hulk, Wolverine, Ryu (Capcom - Street Fighter series)
Rumoured Characters - Super Skrull, Captain America, Dr Doom, Deadpool, Iron Fist, Black Widow, P.N.03 (Capcom - P.N. 03 series), Dante or Nero (Capcom - Devil May Cry series), Frank West (Capcom - Dead Rising series), Felecia (Capcom - Darkstalkers series), Mephisto, Chun-Li (Capcom - Street Fighter series), Rad Spencer (Capcom - Bionic Commando series)
Who I Want to See Included
Thor - He has a movie coming up, so there's no way Marvel doesn't push for him to be included. It would be foolish not to and who doesn't want to smack people with a hammer or throw lightning bolts?
Spider-Man - Was surprised to see he was never mentioned once, but there's no way this game doesn't include him.
Venom - Reskinned Spider-Man, so not much difficulty putting him in. Popular with general public, too, so seems like a definite.
Magneto - He kicked ass in MvC2, so I want to see him back.
Psylocke - She's one of my favourite characters from the various Capcom fighting games based on X-Men or Marvel properties, so I hope to see her again.
Nova - I love me some Nova, so would be awesome to see him in action, but I doubt it'll ever happen. Could go well with...
Thanos - Big Thanos fan, so always rolled with him in MvC2 and was a great boss in the first MvC game . Hoping he returns here.
That's about it for my immediate list of who I'd like to see. I tried to limit it to people that at least had a chance to make the cut, so no Nextwave 'My Robot Brain Needs Beer' super moves in our future.
On the Capcom side of things, I'm not a huge fan of the Street Fighter series. Most fall into either the typical shoto template (uppercuts and fireballs, like Sagat, Sakura, Ryu, Ken, Dan, Akuma, Gouken, etc) or charge characters (Bison, Balrog, Guile, etc). It's the most popular fighter, yet I don't really care for it or the characters. Go figure. I play it and have fun, but just don't get into it at all compared to other fighters, but I assume we'll see Ryu, Ken, Akuma, Bison, Zangief, Chun-Li and maybe one or two others from that franchise.
Teaser Video
Above is a brief teaser of non-gameplay video released with the announcement.
Conclusion
Well, there you have it, everything we know about the upcoming fighting game that will consume hundreds of hours of our lives. I would have preferred a 2D fighter as opposed to the Street Fighter 4 style, but you won't hear me complain about it either. Looking forward to finding out more about the cast of characters and hope it ends up larger than the 30ish they hinted at.
It is Capcom, so it's highly likely we'll be nickel and dimed to death with paid DLC for more characters or simple costume packs. However, I'm holding out hope that this will be a proper update to the 10 year old game, which I rebought on the Xbox Live Arcade when they re-released it a while back and have played the hell out of since then.
What about you? Pumped for a sequel to the classic fighter? Happy with the current roster of characters? Who do you want to see included? Sound off in the comments below.
I'm not sure they can include Spider-Man this time around, what with his rights being tied to Sony games and all. Maybe the Disney merger freed things up, but I doubt it.
And Hulk vs. Chris Redfield? You're gonna need LOTS of rocket launchers for this one, Chris...
About the number of characters, I'm cool with 30, it's plenty. And lets face it: MvC 2 is fun but it's also an unbalanced mess with 50+ characters and the "striker" system.
And MvC without Spider-Man would feel really weird.
Yes, I too wonder about the lack of Spider-Man, but also Mega Man on Capcom's side. He's one of their most well known heroes, was part of the recent Tatsunuko crossover (anime studio) for the Wii, and took part in the first two games.
Mouth is salivating at the thoughts of super combo attacks again.... =)
If this is going to be upgraded with download-able content, imagine the pure amounts in the hundreds of characters and features that could be available....
*wakes up*
Oh no....NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!
LoL seriously this will be good..*crossing fingers*

Just a minor correction: Dante and Nero are from Devil May Cry, not Dante's Inferno.
@Anonymous - Good catch. Brain cramp. Friend has been playing Dante's Inferno and talking about it non stop to me lately. Fixed.
AWESOME.

Oh, and thanks for finding a better quality video than I did. The one I was going to post with had poorly synched audio.
There's only one character this game needs to make it an instant buy for me: Phoenix Wright. :)
That tail on the left makes me think it's Night crawler.
