Crisis on Infinite Arts - Tonci Zonjic's Marvel Divas
In this week's editions of Crisis on Infinite Arts, we are going to do something different. Normally there is one piece that we like to spotlight, but this time around there's four particular pieces I want to show, hence the unusual format. Who are we spotlighting this week? It is Tonci Zonjic, a Croatian artist that has been making a lot of waves recently.
Tonci Zonjic (Home Page | Blog | Twitter ) has been working in various anthologies both in Europe and North America in the last years, before recently jumping to the big leagues with Marvel and DC. Zonjic's art is very stylish and malleable, with the capacity to evoke the noir feel of Sean Phillips and the dynamic action of David Aja seamlessly. He has worked in books like Immortal Iron Fist, Daredevil, and he recently contributed to the Superman 80-Page Giant, where he collaborated with Kathryn Immonen. The duo is also currently working in a five issue weekly mini series called Marvel Heralds.
Zonjic's most impressive effort to date, in my humble opinion, came in the form of the very polarizing mini series Marvel Divas. While the writing took most of the blunt of the criticism, the art was almost universally praised, especially for not having the main characters in ill-fitting spandex. When I reviewed the issue, I noted that Zonjic's ability to instill personality into the characters just by their clothes was incredibly impressing. Not too long ago, he created a new website and he uploaded some of the "pre-production" pieces on each of the starring ladies, basically character models and sketches. In them we can see that there was much thought involved in the clothing and how it related to the characters personality. Hit the jump to see them!
Angelica Jones/Firestar
Monica Rambeau/Photon
Felicia Hardy/Black Cat
Patsy Walker/Hellcat
See what I mean about the notes and the end result? It's astounding work all around. Make sure to visit Zonjic's website and blog, as he posts lots of sketches and scans of the pages he's done in the past.
