Cover of the Week - Ares & Daredevil

As we usually do on Sundays, we take some time to choose the Cover of the Week. This week, Ryan and me go for the theme of "Warriors" although one is a Greek God and the other is a blind lawyer from Hell's Kitchen. Hit the jump to see the winning covers.

Ryan L's Cover of the Week - The Savage Axe of Ares #1 by Rafa Garres

Ryan L.: This was a tight call as the PunisherMax cover is also brilliant. See it below, I'd like to think that's how Bullseye sees people; wide open, always on a target, and great big gaudy bullseyes giving them away at all times. As for this cover, though, it is simply perfect for the format. The previous covers were all a little too polished and flashy to grace the cover of what should be a pulp pleasure. Garres gets Ares right by showing him as savage with a kick ass axe. Below him are the assorted demons and...horned alligators that a god of war takes out in standard battle. There's also a bikini-clad babe dutifully at his ankle but he doesn't seem to give her any time, he's all about the battle. I hope this cover gets this issue a few more bites because I really believe it'll be just as good as the previous efforts in this Mighty Marvel Magazine Format.

Matt's Cover of the Week - Daredevil #506 by Paolo Rivera

Matt: I absolutely LOVE this cover by Paolo Rivera. The obvious Japanese influence is incredibly fitting with the story inside the cover, and everything just plain works. From the soft colors, the movement of the characters, and all the little details sum up to a great and eye catching cover with it's own distinctive look. Early contender for one of the best covers of the year. On a side note: I am surprised that my fellow blogger Ryan, a known Daredevilologist, did not choose this cover as well.

Runners-Up: PunisherMax #6, The Flash #1, Powers #4

@Matt - you're right, the DD cover is pretty awesome, and it was pretty much my third choice, but the Ares art is something I'd actually want to buy and I love Johnson's covers, and this one is just so perfect. That and I don't want to be the guy who picks the DD cover every time. Someone will end up web-lynching me eventually. Glad you chose it though.

That DD cover has been getting a lot of positive comments around the Internet, and I'm happy for every little bit of extra attention for the title. It really is very beautiful and so unusual.
