One of the most interesting aspects of the Runaways, and one that is often overlooked, is just how different all their origins are. Every one of the characters got their powers from varied sources, whether they be alien, technological, magical, and mutant powers, this team had it all, and you definitely get that sense from this pin up by Emma Rios. Every character has his or her own personality, style, and power.
Emma Rios (Home Page | Flickr) is an up and coming artist from Spain with an impressive range in her artwork. As evidenced by the above piece, she feels equally at home drawing the technological aspects, as well as the magical ones, not to mention something so mundane as the street clothes have a vibrancy that you don't usually see from other artists. She has worked in several anthology comics and design work in the European market before making the jump to the other side of the Atlantic.
In her short professional career in the United States industry she has found herself, whether by intention or chance, as the go-to artist for two very different magically themed comics: the criminally underrated Hexed for BOOM! Comics (which you can read in it's entirety for free in MySpace Comics) and Strange, which was written by Mark Waid, for Marvel. She has also recently contributed to titles like Irredeemable, Runaways and Girl Comics, plus an upcoming one-shot, Firestar. I personally would love to see her tackle some of the cosmic titles over at Marvel, but I wouldn't be surprised to see her land a more high profile gig. And I like her Dr. Strange. Kind of reminds me of Leonard Nimoy.
Interesting to see that of all the pieces they all seem to have their own style. That's kinda cool.
I do love that Eternity page, though. That thing is just about perfect for the character.
I miss Runaways
I thought her Strange mini was one of the best comics in recent times, so it's cool to see more of her stuff.
I don't know about the runaways one...I can ignore the wookie feet drawn onto Molly, but there's something about the way Old Lace is sketched that just bugs me, and i think its the way her face and the angle makes her look like the giant vagina-monster from the end of Watchmen.
