Reader Question - X-Mas is Over, Whatcha Get?
The holidays are mostly over, so that means one thing: it's time to count up those gifts you received! Of course, this being a comic book blog, we are mostly interested in comic book related items you got as a gift this year, but feel free to share anything of note.
My comic book-related haul was actually very small, as none of my extended family really knows I like comics, and my closer relatives gave me stuff I actually need instead of stuff I want. I did get a Thor: Ages of Thunder
hardcover though, which I plan to review sometime in the near future.
Additionally, my wife got me the oddest gift of the season: X-Men Monopoly. All the "properties" are mutants, game pieces are random X-Men and so on. It is apparently an extremely rare (since it's out of stock) version, and I'm also going to be doing an extended post about it in the days to come as it is basically a time machine to what the X-Men franchise was like a couple of years ago.
Anyway, enough about me, what comic book related gifts did you get this season? Let me know in the comments section!

My wife is usually the only person to buy me comics, but this year my mom surprised the hell out of me by giving me:
Wolverine Weapon X vol 1: Adamantium Men
Dynamo 5 vol. 3: Fresh Blood
X-Men: First Class: Finals
Immortal Iron Fist vol. 5: Escape from the Eighth City
Incredible Hercules: The Mighty Thorcules
and she pre-ordered Superman: Earth One because she didn't realize it doesn't come out until September.
Yes, I realize how lucky I am.
For comics stuff I got
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Immortal Iron Fist Vol. 5
War of Kings hardcover
I really wish they'd been able to finish out Iron Fist with an artist who wasn't going to suck at it. The crappy art in the final issue does a lot of damage to what should have been a great moment between Danny and Misty.
I also got a Lego model of the Tantive IV, which was pretty sweet.
I got the Messiah War, Incredible Hercules: Dark Reign, and Agents of Atlas: Dark Reign tpbs. Herc was great as usual and I've only read of bit of the others so far.
Well, let's see what I got here, since my birthday is December 5th it all runs together:
Elephantmen Vol. 1
Annihilation Conquest Book 1
20th Century Boys Vol. 1
Plus, my father-in-law went to the comic shop and picked up a bunch of issues from my box, since I was behind on my purchases. Not too shabby for my first Christmas back into comics.
Due to present-buying, I usually don't pick up my books for late November-December (all of it) until after the New Year. Fortunately, my boss gave me a nice bonus which I took down to the Comic Store on December 23 (a Wednesday no less) and picked up about 4-5 weeks of books (thus blowing a nice chunk of my bonus....I pick up about 80+ titles a month). It was easily my favorite gift since I spent the 24th through the 28th (a nice 4 day weekend) catching up on the books I had missed.
The only comic book related items I got were Ultimate Alliance for the Wii and one of my friends got me the leatherbound "Marvel: The Characters and Their Universe" (http://www.amazon.com/Marvel-Characters-Universe-Michael-Mallory/dp/B002TK5N6A/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1262036770&sr=8-3) which I was very suprised/happy to get!!
My girlfriend got me all 4 volumes of Queen & Country Definitive Edition. I got myself Marvel Legends Icon yellow custome Daredevil.
JMS Thor vol 2 Hardcover (but since I already had the softcover I donated it in my friend's name to one of my local libraries.)
Pearls Before Swine: Pearls Sells Out Treasury Stephan Pastis is wickedly funny.
and a 100 dollar gift certificate to Midtown Comics...which means around the 2nd week of January, Daryll is gonna go nuts GN shopping! =)
Had a Birthday and Christmas so I made out like a bandit. I received: Final Crisis hardcover, Starman omnibus Vol 2, All-Star Superman Vol 2 hardcover, And Batman RIP hardcover. So as you can see, Grant Morrison is bigger than Jesus in our household.
This was actually one of the worst Christmas for me comics wise. Only received one book, Final Crisis HC, from my brother. Had the singles, but nice to get the hc for on the shelf, oversized art, etc.
Still waiting on two of our four Christmases, but still snagged some cool comics stuff from my wife:
On Writing Comics Vol. 1 by Alan Moore
Portrait of an Extraordinary Gentleman: A Tribute to Alan Moore
Personalized signed photo of Julie "Catwoman" Newmar
X-Men: Origins - Wolverine DVD
I had an awesome christmas. I got some little Marvel notebook, which I plan on carrying with me everywhere. Also, a little storyboard and figure drawing for comics, I think I'll finally bring quantum existence man into reality in the storyboards.
As for comics, I got an awesome set
Supergirl: Who is superwoman
Showcase presents: World's finest volume 1
Superman and the legion of superheroes (By geoff johns)
Final crisis: Legion of three worlds
McSweeny's quarterly comic book collection 13 (British independent publishing, it's kinda weird)
And last, but not least,
The Immortal Iron fist Omnibus(My maiden voyage into marvel)
I also gave some kickass gifts.
I had a really good comics Christmas this year, as my brother got me the two most recent trades of The Boys (vol. 4 & 5) and the hardcover of Old Man Logan. My mother got me the Absolute Cut of Watchmen and Batman: Arkham Asylum for 360. If it weren't for having to go to work, I'd never stop playing Arkham Asylum.
My awesome g/f game me:
-All the lantern rings (except black and green which I already had).
- Sins of the Star Sapphires GLC TPB.
- 100 dollar gift cert. for use at my lcs, score!
Chew tb, Beta ray bill godhunter and Johnny Hiro.not shabby.
Xmas brought me absolutely no comic cheer, how sad is that...? It's like ten sads, haha. I got a post-xmas sale cheap copy of Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, and interview book Artists on Comic Art, which was cool.
But
My wedding, which was about three weeks ago now, saw my wife buy me the two Sean Phillips artworks that he drew to accompany my essay in the back of Criminal last month, and she framed them up for the walls. They look amazingly awesome, so that's a pretty big score in my eyes and I'll take it for the holidays season. Not to mention just before the wedding, while the Aussie dollar was riding a high wave with the US, the wife-to-be, at the time, let me smash a large Amazon order with the second ex Machine large HC, Asterios Polyp, Parker, Punisher: Six Hours to Kill, Werewolf By Night: In The Blood, Proof Vol 3, BKV's The Escapists, and pre-order Secret Warriors Vol 1 and Walking Dead Vol 11, yeah, she's a real doll.
On Christmas i got
Supreme power Vol. 1
Alias Vol. 3 and 4
I had a great comics christmas being it was my first in over 13 years! My gifts were:
1. From Hell
2. I Kill Giants
3. Sword Volume 3
I got from my wife:
Project Superpowers Vol. 1 TPB
Superman: Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? hardcover by Alan Moore
Fantastic Four movie on DVD (I know, I know, but I haven't seen it, I liked the second one, and it was only $2)
With Christmas money from the parents:
Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps War: Vol 1, 2, and Tales)
Beta Ray Bill: Godhunter
Astonishing X-Men Vol. 3 & 4
The Walking Dead Compendium (Who can pass up over 1000 pages of zombie comics?)
This year I was lucky enough to get both the first two hardcovers of Guardians of the Galaxy (picking up the third with christmas money this thursday hopefully) and the first two books of Annihilation.
Cosmic Chrimbo!
My comic book christmas included...
Wolverine: Origins(wii)
Batman: Arkham Asylum (ps3)
the Wonder Wizard of Oz hardcover and
vol. 2 of Denny O'Neills The Question
Nothing comic-wise. But I did get the complete Star Trek movie set on DVD.
