This edition of the Top 10 Tuesdays takes a lighter tone than usual and looks at 10 Songs That Best Describe A Character. Simply put, we take a character and match a song that best describes them or boils down to what makes them tick. You can view my picks with embedded YouTube music videos below, but feel free to throw out your choices in the comments, too!
1. THOR
Led Zeppelin - Immigrant Song
Lyrics That Best Sum Up Why It Was Chosen:
We come from the land of the ice and snow, From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow. The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands, To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
Kirk: It was a tough choice picking a song that suits Thor as there are so many songs perfect for him, from Ride of the Valkyries to Twilight of the Thunder God to MC Hammer's Hammer Time. Okay scratch that last one, but you get the picture. In the end, Matt reminded me of the original Viking metal song - Led Zepplin's Immigrant Song.
2. SPIDER-MAN
Presidents of the United States - Dune Buggy
Lyrics That Best Sum Up Why It Was Chosen:
Squishy transmission was caught in drive
Spider-Man was squintin' at the sand and the sky
Spider-Woman in the front seat screamin' go go go
He's ridin' the accelerator down to the floor with his fuzzy little toe oe oe oe oe
Kirk: This choice has one caveat and that is that it only applies to Spider-Man when he is driving the Spider-Mobile. All other times, we can go with Streetlight Manifesto's Down, Down, Down To Mephisto's Cafe for the following lyrics,
We're going down, down, down to Mephisto's Cafe
Down, down, down to Mephisto's Cafe (We're going down)
And the gears will spin and the sinners sin, but at least we'll give them hell
And the righteous few will spit on you, so bid them all farewell
We're going down, down, down to Mephisto's Cafe
Fitting, no?
3. THANOS
Meat Loaf - I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)
Lyrics That Best Sum Up Why It Was Chosen:
And I would do anything for love, but I won't do that, I won't do that
Anything for love, oh I would do anything for love
I would do anything for love, but I won't do that, oh I won't do that
Kirk: If this song doesn't describe Thanos's obsession with Death, going so far as wiping out half the universe, than I don't know what song does.
4. IRON MAN Black Sabbath - Iron Man
Lyrics That Best Sum Up Why It Was Chosen:
I am Iron Man! Has he lost his mind? Can he see or is he blind? Can he walk at all Or if he moves will he fall?
Kirk: A man has a vision of the future on the brink of destruction and tries his best to stop that coming catastrophe only to be, in the end, the actual harbringer of said destruction. Iron Man and the Super Hero Registration Act in Civil War? No, that's actually the story told throughout Black Sabbath's Iron Man song. Feel like I'm cheating using this one it's so damn perfect.
5. NEKRON
AC/DC- Back in Black
Lyrics That Best Sum Up Why It Was Chosen:
Back in black I hit the sack I've been too long I'm glad to be back [I bet you know I'm...] Yes, I'm let loose From the noose That's kept me hanging about I've been looking at the sky 'Cause it's gettin' me high Forget the hearse 'cause I never die
Kirk: If Back in Black isn't the song being played when Nekron returns in Blackest Night #4, I don't know what is. I was tempted to quote the whole damn song for the lyrics that best sum up why it was chosen, but couldn't due to space issues.
6. BLACK HAND
Rolling Stones - Paint It Black
Lyrics That Best Sum Up Why It Was Chosen:
I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colours anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
Kirk: Just as Back in Black was Nekron's song, Paint It Black is hands down the only song that fits Black Hand. It even has the colour changing theme to show how much he hates the other spectrums with the wanting to paint it all black.
7. SENTRY
Lazlo Bane - Superman
Lyrics That Best Sum Up Why It Was Chosen:
I know what I've been told
You gotta know just when to fold
But I can't do this all on my own
No, I know I'm no Superman
I'm no Superman
Kirk: Sentry is no Superman.
8. KA-ZAR
Guns N Roses - Welcome to the Jungle
Lyrics That Best Sum Up Why It Was Chosen:
Welcome to the jungle
We got fun 'n' games
We got everything you want
Honey we know the names
We are the people that can find
Whatever you may need
If you got the money honey
We got your disease
Kirk: What more is there to say? If you're scoring a girl like Shanna the She-Devil and have a pet sabertooth tiger, you're probably rocking out to Welcome to the Jungle in the Savage Land, too.
9. BOOSTER GOLD Dr Hook - Cover of the Rolling Stone
Lyrics That Best Sum Up Why It Was Chosen:
And we keep getting richer, But we can't get our picture on the cover of the Rolling Stone
Kirk:Booster Gold is all about being famous and getting his picture on the cover of magazines. What better song to fit him than Dr Hook's Cover of the Rolling Stone and the trials and tribulations of trying to get on the cover of the world famous magazine.
Nice - esp Thor. Was this prompted by that recent variant cover with Thor and listening to an ipod? Just a quick few thoughts going through my mp3 player. Two easy ones first:
Ghost Rider: Ghost Rider by the Rollins Band
Invincible: 'Invincible' by Muse (off Black Holes and revelations)
Galactus: The Great Destroyer by Nine inch Nails (year zero - line: I hope they cannot see the limitless potential living inside of me, I hope they cannot see I am the great destroyer)...any number of early 80s metal songs would also fit this bill.
The Red Ghost and his super apes: Space Monkey by Placebo
Moebius: Pretty much anything by HIM
Jesse Custer (Preacher) - 'Bible and the Gun' by Shihad (NZ rock band - line 'well you're caught between the bible and the gun when everyone thinks you're the one')
Ego - Ego, the living planet by Monster Magnet (it only has one line in 5 mins - 'I talk to planets baby')
"Space Lord" by monster magnet with lyrics like "I lost my soul when I fell to earth, my planets call me to the void of my birth, the time has come to kill this game, now open wide and say my name...space lord..." well, I'm sure King Blastaar of the Negative Zone would want that song to be about him.
Punisher - a personal choice but '[R]etaliate' by the Mark of Cain (Aussie Hardcore band), partly for just how incredibly angry the song, but also these lyrics:
I never needed this I never wanted it I never needed it I will retaliate
And without a doubt, my fave, and something I hope they use for the movie
Green Lantern: 'The Emerald Law' by Probot (lots of discussion of law, of sun/light, and just nice big metal sound)
I do not die, but awaken from the dream i lived As above? so below, be revealed, the truth be known ...
Behold the falcon surveys the horizon Great scribe let us see, your runes of mystery Serpent shares your name, the keeper of eternal flames Prevail the law of three, the goddess guides humanity
He weighs your heart a life pure a life false And they learn the sword decieved by false words And their greed and their lies cause them to be blind ...
And now the souls they swing Swirl in the cosmic ring Creations spark it has no time Rejoin the realm of divine
Enthroned true one he sails into the sun ...
So far so near cloaked in the mists of fear Above below what's hidden will be shown Divine majesty true scrolls of destiny What's concealed will be revealed Those you see will be received The law of three, humanity The law of one, INTO THE SUN
Try to see it my way, Only time will tell if I am right or I am wrong. While you see it your way There's a chance that we might fall apart before too long. We can work it out
Punisher: (Bruce Springsteen: Darkness on the edge of town)
I lost my wife Them things don't seem to matter much to me now Tonight I'll be on that hill `cause I can't stop I'll be on that hill with everything I got Lives on the line where dreams are found and lost I'll be there on time and I'll pay the cost For wanting things that can only be found In the darkness on the edge of town
Morbius The Living Vampire: (Type O Negative: Suspended In Dusk)
Four centuries of this damned immortality Yet, I did not ask to be made. Why? I will never again know your sun upon my face Or the comfort of a grave I am not alive and I am not dead This is Hell on earth
damn...these are great...on a related note have you guys heard "Ring Capacity" by Kirby Krackle..a great lyrical rock interpretation of Hal fighting with a power ring dwindling in power.
Also a classic rap is by The Emperor called Secret Wars where he played the Beyonder and set up matchups of the biggest names in Marvel vs Lyrical Hip-Hop stars...very funny and the wordplay is amazing.
I disagree with the Thanos song you chose because the "but I won't do that" line hardly fits a guy who wiped out half the universe. I'd go with The Stills instead:
you're all i really need and i'm just so bored of wasting my time love and death are always on my mind
"The Ballad of Barry Allen" for Quicksilver. While it's supposed to be about Barry, of course, the lyrics are far more relevant to Quicksilver...whenever he decides to act like a hero instead of a terrorist.
I always, always think Charlie Huston's initial Moon Knight arc, "The Bottom" whenever I hear one of my favourite songs, "Closer" by Kings of Leon. It's a very atmospheric song, and I can listen to it over and over again and not get bored. They need to make a Moon Knight film (with Timothy Olyphant, natch!) just so they can put this song in it or on the trailer. Some of the lyrics are:
"The floor is crackling cold She took my heart I think she took my soul" (regarding Marlene)
"With the moon I run Far from the carnage of the fiery sun" (self-explanatory)
"Feel so good but i'm old, 2000 years of chasing Takin' it's toll" (Konshu)
there are other lyrics which are up for interpretation, you should all give it a listen tho!
That song would definately have been my pick for The Sentry because it's basically a song about Insane Superman who's in love and the lyrics translate straight across to The Sentry and Lindsey's situation.
Stem - High Stakes, for the anti-registration side on Civil War.
"I've heard many voices Telling me I've made wrong choices But I'm free Don't need All the things that they can't live without Wait and see We're making history
So, let's go Let's learn to love the fight No comprommise in our minds We will give our lives For right, Unite For swiftly comes the night We dedicate each breath we take to win Cause there's high stakes for all of us."
Entombed's "Wolverine blues" for the Bub himself. The song's a massive underground hit since 1993(just check the number of hits on YouTube) and it's really about the character too.
"I'm a misanthropical breed insatiable in my need to feed
Utterly fearless for your luscious flesh I've got am appetite like a war and I always hunger for more
Vicious mammal the blood is my call pound for pound I am the most vicious of all "
A no brainer really.
Talking about no brainers what about the Rollins Band "Ghost Rider"?

Great choices Kirk, especially Brainstem and Iron Man. I love that Iron Man song, one of my favorites from Black Sabbath.
Superman, funny choice, I guess it sort of works in a weird way.
Nekron...heh...now you're just trying to be cute with this whole idea.
It's kinda of unfair but Styx - Captain America is obviously fitting for Steve Rogers.
Before I even think of some other examples, I just have to say that you led with the best. That song is perfect for Thor, absolutely perfect.

AC/DC - TNT for Bruce Banner/The Hulk
Superman/Batman: (Beatles:We can work it out)
Try to see it my way,
Only time will tell if I am right or I am wrong.
While you see it your way
There's a chance that we might fall apart before too long.
We can work it out
Punisher: (Bruce Springsteen: Darkness on the edge of town)

I'll be on that hill with everything I got

For wanting things that can only be found
In the darkness on the edge of town
Rorschach: (Romilda Vane And The Chocolate Cauldrons: Hide Your Face)
You hide your face
You don’t show any fear, no,
You’ll do all that it takes
You just hope it’s enough
Morbius The Living Vampire: (Type O Negative: Suspended In Dusk)
Four centuries of this damned immortality
Yet, I did not ask to be made. Why?
I will never again know your sun upon my face
Or the comfort of a grave
I am not alive and I am not dead
This is Hell on earth
Werewolf By Night: (Echo And The Bunnymen: The Killing Moon)
In starlit nights I saw you
So cruelly you kissed me
Your lips a magic world
Your sky all hung with jewels
The killing moon
Will come too soon
Bruce Springsteen – "I'm On Fire" for Human Torch

Fun list, but it's "Stem," not "steam."

no 3 doors down - Kryptonite?
"The Ballad of Barry Allen" for Quicksilver. While it's supposed to be about Barry, of course, the lyrics are far more relevant to Quicksilver...whenever he decides to act like a hero instead of a terrorist.
I'm surprised at the large amount of comic book characters that get mentioned in songs. I didn't know about half of these songs.

"Running Wild" by Airborn for The Joker.
"Three Doors Down- Kryptonite"
That song would definately have been my pick for The Sentry because it's basically a song about Insane Superman who's in love and the lyrics translate straight across to The Sentry and Lindsey's situation.
Got another good one
Stem - High Stakes, for the anti-registration side on Civil War.
"I've heard many voices
Telling me I've made wrong choices
But I'm free
Don't need
All the things that they can't live without
Wait and see
We're making history
So, let's go

No comprommise in our minds

For right, Unite
