The Blackest Night Primer - Blue Lantern Corps

Our Blackest Night primer continues to roll along, this time trying to bring hope to you all with a spotlight on the Blue Lantern Corps. These corps primers will cover the basics of each corps, from their oath to their leaders to their homeworlds, as well as their strengths, weaknesses and noteworthy members heading into the event.

If you missed any of our Blackest Night primer, make sure to check out the index post for basic information, links to all the other posts and the schedule for upcoming posts. When you're ready, hit the jump for everything you need to know about the Blue Lantern Corps. Also, much like yesterday's Red Lantern Corps primer, this one was written by Matt and, due to time zone issues, I'm posting it for him.

Corps Colour: Blue
Emotional Spectrum: Hope
First Appearance: Final Crisis: Rage of the Red Lanterns #1
Homeplanet: Odym (Sector 2682)
Leader: Ganthet & Sayd
Key Stories: Rage of the Red Lanterns, Agent Orange
Oath:
"In fearful day, in raging night,
With strong hearts full our souls ignite,
When all seems lost in the War of Light,
Look to the stars --
For hope burns bright!"

Origin: The origins of the Blue Lantern Corps can be traced back to the early days of the Sinestro Corps War. Two of the Guardians of the Universe, Ganthet and Sayd, disagreed with the others about the status of emotions and the rewriting of the Book of Oa. They were willing to embrace emotions as a means to prevent the Blackest Night, but the dissent from their peers meant their banishment from the group. Together, Ganthet and Sayd began a new group to aid the Green Lantern Corps and the universe, based on the blue light of hope.

Initiation: The choosing of new Blue Lanterns is a very selective process that differs greatly from any other corps and has been shown to take days worth of discussion. It is an education process provided by the two leaders, Ganthet and Sayd, regarding the necessity and power of the Blue Light. Each sector has (or will have) a Blue Lantern Corps member to represent them and the selection of candidates is done by the Blue Lantern of the sector before. For example, the Blue Lantern of sector 1 selects the candidate of sector 2 and the Lantern of sector 2 selects the candidate of sector 3, and so on. Because of the difficulty and length of this process, there's relatively few Blue Lanterns at the moment.

Powers: The Blue Lantern Corps claim to be the most powerful of all the corps, asserting that the Blue Light is the one that burns brightest. Blue Lanterns harness the power of hope from the emotional spectrum to create powerful constructs and perform amazing feats. For example, using the hope of a whole planet, two Blue Lanterns were able to regress a dying star to an earlier stage, thus preventing it from exploding.

The constructs of the Blue Lanterns are based on the hopes of the target and work by soothing the emotions of said target. Additionally, the Blue Lanterns can amplify the power of Green Lanterns to incredible levels, sap the power and charge of Yellow Lanterns and cleanse the rage from people infected by Red Lanterns.

Weaknesses: Blue Lanterns can only operate to full capacity when in proximity of a Green Lantern. Without the presence of a member of the Green Lantern Corps, Blue Lantern rings only provide the power of flight and protection from the vacuum of space. For this reason, the Blue Lantern Corps want Hal Jordan to be their leader. Additionally, it has been hinted that the use of a Blue Lantern ring is "costly" to the wielder and that induction into the Blue Lanterns could lead to eventual death.

Notable Members

Ganthet & Sayd (Sector 0)

Former Guardians of the Universe and founders of the Blue Lantern Corps. They are involved romantically with each other.

Saint Walker (Sector 1)

Blue Lantern of Sector 1 and the first person to join the Blue Lanterns Corps. He deputized Hal Jordan into the Blue Lantern Corps, in order to save him from the Red Lanterns, by placing his own ring into Hal's hand.

Warth (Sector 2)

Blue Lantern of Sector 2, selected to join the Blue Lantern Corps by Saint Walker. He physically resembles the Hindu God Ganesha and was involved in the battle of Ysmault alongside Saint Walker and Hal Jordan.

Hynn (Sector 3)

Blue Lantern of Sector 3, he was shown during his selection process with Ganthet and Sayd at the end of Rage of the Red Lanterns.

Sercy (Sector 4)

Similar to Hynn, she was shown at the very end of a story arc during her recruitment, her appearance being at the end of Agent Orange as Larfleeze attacked the Blue Lantern homeworld.

Hal Jordan (Sector 2814)

Deputized into the Blue Lantern Corps by Saint Walker, from the Sector 2814. The power of the Blue Light cleansed him from the Red Lantern infection, but caused interference with his Green Lantern ring. Because of Hal's possesion of a Blue Lantern ring, he became involved in a prolonged fight with Larfreeze of the Orange Lanterns, who wanted the ring for himself. During the encounter, Hal tapped into the blue ring and expended all of its energy reserves. Once depleted, it determined that Hal was not a suitable Blue Lantern and left to find a new host.

At first I thought them having the member of the preceding sector choose the member from the next sector was a bit dumb, but after thinking about it more I think it speaks better to what their corp and their founders stand for. Rather than having the rings arbitrarily select the new members, they allow the newest member to select the newest recruit based on their emotional feelings towards them (basically they feel emotionally sound in their selection).

Further, this is likely a better method given the history of the Green Lantern Corp. Look what happened with Sinestro since the rings are simply set to arbitrarily select the new member. Overall Sinestro was a good choice, but emotionally he wasn't.

Damn Geoff Johns is an amazing writer when you sit back and think about the decisions he makes. I never would have thought of that in a million years.

@ModernTenshi - Technically, Mogo guides the GL rings, so its not random selection for them. Not sure how he does it, but it was a major plotpoint for the Sinestro Corps War.

And Sinestro took his ring. He wasnt chosen. GL that was dying, similar to Abin Sur, lent him the ring to fight some Weaponers, Sinestro killed them and then refused to give the ring back to the alien, who would have been able to live with the aid of the ring now that the Weaponers were defeated. Guardians never knew about it and he became the new GL for that sector.

Also, while the Blue Lantern of the previous sector does pick a candidate, they still have to go through the recruitment/indoctrination process with Ganthet and Sayd. Whether they are deemed worthy after that still matters. Finally, Im not sure how it works, but Hals ring went flying off to find a replacement for Sector 2814 once it deemed him unworthy in the fight with Larfleeze. Maybe the first roster of recruits were set to be handpicked for Blue Lanterns, but it seems the rings can pick their own replacements if need be.

Damn, I had forgotten what had happened to Hal's right after the fight. That will probably be picked up on in Blackest Night.

Oooh, Hal's ring totally slipped my mind.
Also, I LOVE Hal's Blue Lantern face next to the rest.

At first, I thoguht the Hope Lanterns were a tad lousy when they first appeared but I've really warmed up to them. They've really surprised me; wasn't expecting to like them this much. Too bad they are almost certainly not going to make it through Blackest Night.

I could see Ganthet and Sayd stepping in to lead the GLC post-BN with the limited number of Blue Lanterns acting as group leaders for GL squads in what will probably be a very thinned out GLC due to deaths.

@ Kirk - i'd be really happy with that outcome, that's a good idea.

Better than my one, anyway, of having a Lantern Power Rangers team. Think how many arguments there'd be in THAT team.

Larfleeze: Give me all your rings.
Atrocitus: SHUT UP!
Green Lantern: Why am I seeing a yellow image of my dead father?
Sinestro: Oops, sorry.
Saint Walker: I hope this works out.
Black Hand: I hope you die.
