Post-Crisis Comic Book Previews for 04/08/09

Exciting things to look forward to this week. DC's coming out swinging with what I consider their two best books, Green Lantern and Secret Six, as well as the second issue of both Battle for the Cowl and World of New Krypton.

On the Marvel side of things, we've got a book everyone should be reading, Captain Britain & MI13, War of Kings: Ascenion and the debut of my most anticipated book, Jason Aaron's and Ron Garney's Wolverine: Weapon X. Yes, another Wolverine title from Marvel. The only difference between it and the other ones is this one will be good.

In unrelated news, we've added a Recent Comments listing on the sidebar for your convience. It keeps track of the ten most recent comments. Hit the jump and feel free to comment on these week's previews if you want to see it in action!

BATMAN: BATTLE FOR THE COWL #2 (OF 3)
Written by Tony Daniel
Art by Tony Daniel and Sandu Florea

With the destruction of Arkham Asylum and dozens of Gotham City's most lethal villains rioting through the streets, it would seem that Nightwing, Robin and their allies have their hands full. But they hadn't counted on the return of Batman himself! But is it really The Dark Knight? If so, why is he acting so strangely? And if not, is this a threat that could mean the destruction of Gotham?

This 3-issue series continues to shock and surprise as the battle shifts to the next level with a face-off and ending that will have everybody talking. Who has earned the right to be Batman? Who thinks they deserve it? Robin? Nightwing? Jason Todd? Who will ultimately win the BATTLE FOR THE COWL?

Kirk: Wasn't blown away with the first issue of this, but it was better than I expected. Considering its only a three issue long event, I don't feel too bad picking up the rest of it.

CAPTAIN BRITAIN AND MI13 #12
Written by Paul Cornell
Art by Leonard Kirk

In issue 3, Pete Wisdom let loose hordes of Magical villains in order to fight the Skrulls. His chickens are coming home to roost as Dracula has united these forces. They’ve begun to rip MI13 apart and take England for their own. Treaty with Doctor Doom or not, their threat will not be contained to Great Britain. And there’s nothing Pete can do about it…

Kirk: Dracula. Vampires on the Moon. Invading Britain. Dr Doom. All of these things are ridiculous. Ridiculously awesome. There's very little left I can say about this book that I haven't already said numerous times before. If you aren't buying it, please, do yourself a favour and grab a trade or random issue and enjoy one of the best books on the market.

DARK REIGN: HAWKEYE #1
Written by Andy Diggle
Art by Tom Raney

From the pages of DARK AVENGERS—Bullseye cuts loose! The media knows him only as Hawkeye–-but we know he’s really the psychopath named Bullseye! How does the world’s deadliest assassin fit in with Norman Osborn’s hand-picked team of public do-gooders? What’s his agenda, and how does it instantly jeopardize the entire Avengers legacy? And how long can the most ruthless killer ever to walk the Earth be kept on a leash? The one-two punch of writer Andy Diggle (THUNDERBOLTS) and Tom Raney (SECRET INVASION: INHUMANS) unite for the solo mini-series that puts the innocent right in the angry archer’s crosshairs!

Kirk: I'm not sure if I'll be getting this or not. I've already got a couple of Dark Reign minis on the go (FF and Elektra, to be exact) and I'm not exactly hurting for books this week either. Unless there's a demand for a review, I'll probably skip it.

GREEN LANTERN #39
Written by Geoff Johns
Art by Philip Tan and Jonathan Glapion

"Agent Orange" Part 1 and featuring an "Origins and Omens" backup tale! As the orange light of avarice erupts in violence within the Vega System, the secrets of the Guardians' pact with the criminals of the universe that has kept the Vega System off limits is revealed. Hal Jordan comes face to face with the mysterious and immensely powerful Agent Orange in a bizarre confrontation.

Kirk: Origins and Omens? I thought those were a one time thing from back in February or March? Not that I'm complaining or anything, as I enoyed them when they were running, but I'm just curious over their return this month.

As for the Orange Lanterns, been anticipating Agent Orange's appearance since he was first hinted at back during con season. Also, Philip Tan's sketches for the various Orange Lanterns over at Newsarama over the past month have only upped my anticipation for this arc.

SECRET SIX #8
Written by Gail Simone
Art by Carlos Rodriguez and Bitt

It's a special double date issue as the surviving members of the Six take a night on the town in that disturbing way that only they can do. It's dinner and a movie with bullets and bloodshed in an all-romance (with violence) issue you won't want to miss! Plus, what does Ragdoll dream about? Um, it's not for the squeamish.

Kirk: This is probably my favourite book coming out of DC right now. Yes, above even Green Lantern. As such, I'm really looking forward to this 'down time' issue. The previews for it looked great with a return of that Knockout lookalike stripper the team hired for Scandal way back when.

SUPERMAN: WORLD OF NEW KRYPTON #2 (OF 12)
Written by James Robinson and Greg Rucka
Art by Pete Woods

Superman thought that joining his people on New Krypton would allow him to ease some of the tension between Earth and his people, but lately nothing's been easy for the Man of Steel! Alura still shows no signs of becoming the kind of leader Superman wants her to be. The people of New Krypton still don't understand the responsibilities that come with their new abilities. And as for Zod? Superman doesn't even know where to start with Zod. All The Man of Steel knows is that he can't be trusted. And Zod is about to prove Superman right.

Kirk: I was quite impressed with the decision to put Superman in the military guild under Zod's rule and the possibilities it opened up for this storyline. Turned a book I had concerns about even picking up into a must read.

WAR OF KINGS: ASCENSION #1
Written by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning
Art by Paolo Pantalena & Harvey Tolibao

A WAR OF KING tie-in! Who is Talon? What does he want with the young Earthman that ‘90s comic junkies know as Chris Powell? What is the shocking truth that connects the hero called Darkhawk not only to the Shi’Ar, but to the larger cosmos? And how does it all lead to a confrontation with Annihilus’ forces in the Negative Zone? It’s secret-revealing sci-fi action from the creative team that AintItCoolNews.com said has made NOVA “a great, fun book that brings back memories of fun superhero comics I read as a kid”!

Kirk: I like the fact Abnett and Lanning are writing this miniseries. When the writers of the main event book are also doing the tie-ins, it gives me the impression the books will matter and their events will have consequences unlike other events where the tie-ins ends up being simple cash grabs.

WOLVERINE: WEAPON X #1
Written by Jason Aaron
Art by Ron Garney

“THE ADAMANTIUM MEN” Part 1 (of 5)
In the jungles of Colombia, people are turning up dead, whole villages brutally slaughtered by a team of soldiers who move through the shadows like ghosts. On the streets of San Francisco, Logan learns that the files from the old Weapon X program, the blueprints for building Adamantium-laced super soldiers like himself, have fallen into the hands of the evil corporation, Roxxon. Once again, it seems, someone is looking to build the perfect killing machine. That means it's time for Wolverine to step in, and remind them that someone already did. Plus 8 pages of Director's Cut Extras!

Kirk: I'm a huge Jason Aaron mark and reuniting him with his Get Mystique! artist, Ron Garney, was a stroke of genius. Can't wait to see what these two have in store for this title. This is easily my most anticipated book this week.

Funny thing about the GL Origin and Omens is that DC already put it on their website.

I too am psyched for Weapon X, it looks great. I was going to get Battle for the Cowl from #2 but decided to skip on it, I look forward to your reviews of both though.

Kirk Warren said...

Actually, that one is from an earlier GL issue when they were running the O&O's through all the other books. I assume this will feature a new O&O backup at least.

Judging from the preview on Newsarama a couple of weeks or months back and the creative team behind it, Dark Reign: Hawkeye looks to be really good. Here's where u can find the preview. http://www.newsarama.com/php/multimedia/album.php?gid=887

Hey Kirk I'm curious if you'll be checking out or are interested in Timestorm: 2009/2099

Kirk Warren said...

@Anonymous - The previews do look good, but I might wait to see what it looks like on the shelf before deciding to purchase it or not.

@Andrenn - I actually never got into the 2099 books when they came out, so this Timestorm revival of it didn't really interest me in the slightest.

The Church of Aaron will hopefully gain a lot of converts with the new Weapon X series.

same DC pulls as you, looking forward to Superman and GL most though.

From Marvel, I'm getting Captain Britain and Ascension.

Green Lantern is slowly becoming the most consistent and best mainstream DC title. So excited for this year.

On the DC side I have Secret Six, GL, Superman world of new krypton, Battle for the cowl,

On the marvel side I have Captain Britain, Daredevil Noir, Dark Reign: Hawkeye, War of Kings: Ascension, and Wolverine Weapon X.

Are u interested in Daredevil Noir at all because Spider man and X-men noir kicked major ass.

Kirk Warren said...

The Noir titles haven't really thrilled me. Which is odd, since I like noir style books. Daredevil Noir, though, just seems redundant. That book is about as noir as a superhero book can get as it is.
