Sorry for the lack of a Top 10 Tuesday this week, I was caught up doing some research for a series of posts I'll be doing in the next week or two on comic book binding, the practice of self-binding your single issues into hardcover format at your local book bindery.However, I'll cut the tease for that feature short there and get to the point of this post. As I was researching and having experience with comic book binding, the concept of the value of comics and 'destroying that value' through binding arose and got me to thinking about what my most valuable comic book actually was.
While I haven't really checked any price guides in years, I did a quick eBay search to check some prices and, if the big cover image accompanying this post didn't give it away, the issue in question ended up being Amazing Spider-Man #238, best known for the first appearance of Hobgoblin.

Ignoring auctions with no bids or long running times left, I ended up with a range from about $35-75 for a non-CGC'd version and an average of about $45. Good thing I'm not planning on retiring any time soon, ahaha. I actually have Absolute hardcovers that cost more than the value of that one comic, but that's not the point of this question.
So, as per the title of this post, what is YOUR most valuable comic book? If you have a price guide, feel free to quote it. If you don't hop on eBay and do a quick search like I did and brag up the comic book gold you've got stashed in those long boxes!

I do most of my collecting in trades and only really started reading with Ultimate Spider-Man so my most valuable comic is probably worth less then the $2.99 i paid for it.
I picked that exact comic up for a dollar a few years ago. Still has the tattoos! I'm not sure about my single most valuable comic, Amazing Spider-Man #96 might be worth something. I have some Silver age Superman comics that might be worth something.
Amazing Spider-Man #33, the classic pick the metal wreckage off himself so he can get Aunt May the antidote. It was from ebay and its in pretty bad condition, but its more symbolic than anything. Too awesome.
I have some scattered 60's Legion Adventure Comics and Action Comics #253 but for my most expensive, I guess it would be my VF/NM Flash #139, the first appearance of Professor Zoom. Considering I'm only 19, I find this pretty impressive.
It seems Venom: Lethal Protecter #1 is worth a lot more of I CG grade it. I've kept it in excellent condition.
Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-man ranges from 99 cents to 35 dollars...huh.
I've got the first issues of the 90's Ghost Rider series, not tons valuable.
I've got some old issues of Daredevil when Frank Miller was writing but I'm not sure if it's worth much. I've got he first appearance of Blackheart and Elektra issues.
@Anonymous - no worries on that front. I rarely spend my money on older comics for the simple fact I can buy more trades or reprints for much less. Sometimes quantity trumps quality. Just depends on what mentality you collect comics with.
@Rawnzilla - Isnt that the harry osborn drug issue? Thats impressive. Did you get that at a con or random back issue hunting a shop? I technically own the issue, if you count black and white Essential reprints ahaha.
My brother actually has the entire Amazing Spider-Man run from issue #100 to present (actually, I think the run ends around the relaunch by Mackie), to which he doesnt hesitate to run in my face all the time.
@dhodum - Youd be hard pressed to find that comic in any condition, let alone a very fine or near mint version.
@Sebastian - That is impressive given the amount of time youve been collecting. The only recent comic I can think of that's worth anything noteworthy is Ultimate SPider-Man #1 and maybe #2 or 3 of the series. I recall they used to be worth $100 or so each, but the price may have dropped with the abundance of trade reprints since then.
@Andrenn - I remember when Venom: Lethal Protector used to be featured in Wizard when I was younger with insane prices, but I think it was for a rare black cover or something (maybe dynamic forces or some random variant, it had 5 or 6 different coloured covers if I recall).
I just checked Ebary as to Daredevil, #168 is going for 600 bucks if it's in good condition and graded. While the comic I have isn't a torn up mess it's not all that great condition. Otherwise normally it's just 10 bucks.
The apperance of blackheart issues are worth around 8 dollars.
I've also got some really old issues of Spider-man, I think the oldest being around 100 and something. Gwen Stacy was still around so before her death. Also some really old Daredevil and Thor comics.
I'm sure that in all of it I've got something of good worth, I haven't checked around in it for a very long time though is the thing.
Geez, I don't know. The oldest comic I've got is Avengers 4 (a birthday gift from my folks when I was in high school--it cost $20 at the time). It was only in Fine condition then, so it's probably not worth a whole heck of a lot now (although it's still bagged).
Oh, and I asked for it because I wanted to read the story. Back then, buying the back issue was the ONLY option for that.
I've got Uncanny X-men 136 and 142. They are both in pretty good condition. I don't remember what I paid for them, but I got them because they have sentimental value to me because The Phoenix Saga and Days of Futures Past got me into comics in the first place.
I honestly have no idea I've got a bunch of random stuff in my collection so that's a hard call.
Kirk, I inherited my collection from my older brother and I have been given countless comics from people over the years. I honestly don't know where half of my collection came from.
i have a g-vg copy of hulk 181 (1st appearance of wolverine) and a NM copy of x-men 50.
hmm, without checking my collection I'm not sure. My Age of Apocalypse collection doesn't seem to be worth alot, but then I don't intend to sell it. I do have a copy of the spiderman black issue. That seems to be $25 or $40, for what it's worth. I have a book that some places say is $500, but ebay there says $15.
I've got some old comics like the issue of Teen Titans where Nightwing was introduced and the history of Deathstroke, but the cover came off and anyway it's just a BW reprint.
I have one of the first printings of the Death of Superman, i dont think its worth that much, but i will never give it up, it was very emotionally impactful on my childhood seeing my hero die. Priceless in my eyes
I happened across an Incredible Hulk 180 in my uncles old box of comics, and got it from him.
Since it's the first appearance of Wolverine at the very end, I know it's worth something. I haven't put in the leg work of getting it graded or priced though.

Amazing Spiderman 26 when he goes to the psychiatrist. Its Ditko art and while just in fine condition it was given to me by my father who went into the comic store to find me something 60s to be the gem in my huge collection. He was right...it is the gem.
Cool topic! I've been collecting for 30 years so I have quite a few books. Some of my most valuable are Iron Man #1 (1st series), Avengers #16 (new line up), Tales of Suspense #64 (still trying to get #57), Amazing Spider-Man #50.
I used to have Action Comics #3 (from 1938) Got it from my grandfather, it was in great shape VG+. I sold it in 1988 for $3,000, it's worth about $15,000 (if it's in the same shape) right now. Some other books I got from him (shape is not that great) are Batman 25-29, and Superman 50.
Ultimate Spider-man #1 cgc graded 9.9. I haven't checked to see how much it's worth, but I'm pretty sure it's worth a good amount of cash.
I also have Frank Miller's Wolverine Mini-series 1-4, and Batman the Killing Joke both cgc graded 9.8
I didn't start collecting until late 80's, but I was fortunate enough to jump onto Amazing Spider-Man just a couple of issues before McFarlane's 1st ish in #298, so I've got those, including #300 with the 1st Venom. Not sure what that goes for, but it's definitely my most valuable.
I too, have Ultimate Spider-Man #1, but seeing as how many people have it in this thread alone, it's probably worth shit.
Other than that, Deadpool #11 (the Amazing Fantasy parody one) is out of print, and I have it. I checked on eBay and it's worth 15 bucks apparently.
Also, The Maxx #1 and Savage Dragon #1. I got both of those for 1 buck on a sale, so I doubt they are worth anything anyway.
Unfortunately as a UK resident all the comics I bought when I was a kid are the Marvel UK ones, which I suspect would be worth much less.
However, you can pry my Age of the Sentry comics from my cold dead hands. They'll be worth a fortune in thirty years, you mark my words!

I have Amazing Spiderman 365, the 30 anniversary issue, that with the hologram. It ranges from 3 dollars to 39 dollars.
I have about 2/3 of the run of Miracleman by Alan Moore. Issue #15 is worth the most - roughly $200 in the condition I have it in...
my guess would be Uncanny X-Men #100. i could something worth more, but i don't remember everything in my longboxes!
I'm 34 and started collecting in 1986. I probably have over 10,000 comics in long boxes in the house hidden in closets all over the house (much the chagrin of my wife).
I have every Daredevil comic from the first and second run. #1 might only be graded at a 3.0 but everything else is good to fine to near mint starting in the Miller 160+ run to current.
I have a good/fine copy of Giant Size X-Men and every issue from 94 - current of Uncanny with most in fine/near mint and many from #10-94 in good/fine condition.
Not many DC at all and certainly not many worth any money.
Uncanny X-Men #1 is my most valuable book. Of course it was just X-Men back in the 60's when it came out. My copy is in fine condition, haven't price guided it in a while but it was around $1500 last time I checked. After that my next most valuable is Uncanny X-Men #4.

I have very few comics indeed, but somewhere along the way I picked up the same ASM as El Sr. Lado Brillante: the 30th anniversary issue with the hologram. It's sitting somewhere in a box in a basement, but should be in pretty much the same condition as when I got it.
I honestly don't know. I suspect some of my New Teen Titans collection or original run of Crisis on Infinite Earths is probably worth something these days, since I've kept everything bagged since I started and bagged-and-boarded since the early 1990s. And I've got a few books with writer or artist autographs. But I've never really priced anything except books I wanted to get rid of.
I have picked up a number of Golden-Age Flash issues, but they're all readers' copies. Of course, they're readers' copies from the 1940s, so they range from $20 to $120. Probably one of those would be my most valuable.
Would you believe after collecting since 1992 my most expensive comic was a freebee handed out at San Diego in 2006... A NBC Heroes comic.
I've got copies of Spider-Man #50 and (Uncanny) X-Men #3, both are not in good condition, but Spider-Man #50 is the "Spider-Man No More" issue (and I think the first appearance of Kingpin) and I'm happy to own it.
Great topic, I haven't really thought about this in awhile. It's funny because it reminds me of when I was a kid and I actually thought I was going to make loads of money off my comic collection someday. I don't think that anymore of course, but my collection is probably even more valuable to me today because of all the great memories attached to them.
Probably my most valuable comics would be Amazing Spiderman #300, which was the first full appearance of Venom (and I kinda wish they kept the look he had in this first appearance), Secret Wars #8, which was the origin of Spiderman's black costume (and the first comic I ever bought, so very fond memories here), and New Mutants #87, which was the first appearance of Cable (used to be worth a lot, not so much now I think).

i have some old 60's thor comics, with jack kirby covers, some old dc stuff, and Amazing spiderman #90 with the death of captain stacy, not bad for an antique shop buy!!

I have ASM #78 and 99 both worth $140 each, and i got my hands on that p.o.s. ASM issue with obama on the cover which is "worth" $75.
I think I still have DC Comics Presents 26 buried somewhere. That was the first appearance of the New Teen Titans, a month or so before their series launched. It's probably the one comic that's really worth something.
I wonder if a first printing of the Watchmen TPB has any value. Probably not, aside from that it was a gift from a friend and belonged to her late first husband.
