Post-Crisis Comic Book Previews for 10/03/07

Another round of Post-Crisis Comic Book Previews this week with a wide selection of comics from both DC and Marvel slated for next week. Some interesting stuff next week with Kingdom Come Superman appearing in Justice Society of America #10, a new issue of Powers and the debut a new title that's piqued my interest greatly, Omega The Unknown. A 'light' week, if you can call it that, for me with only 12 books waiting for me to pick up. If you guys know of anything I missed or should be picking up, let me know now so I can add it to the pull list so it's ready and waiting for me next week. Before you tear into the previews, make sure you check out this week's Weekly Crisis Comic Book Reviews Volume 9! Once you're done there, hit the jump for the previews.

KIRK'S PULL LIST FOR DC COMICS FOR OCTOBER 3, 2007

COUNTDOWN 30
Story by Paul Dini
Breakdowns by Keith Giffen
Script by Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Gray
Art by Jesus Saiz
Cover by Ian Churchill & Norm Rapmund

Karate Kid confronts Brother Eye! Jimmy Olsen is grabbed by Forager! Shadowpact tries to subdue an out-of-control Mary Marvel! The Crime Syndicate, the Extremists and Monarch gather against the Challengers! Holly and Harley arrive on Paradise Island — and begin their “training”! A lucky coin-toss might have Two-Face save Piper and Trickster from Checkmate! And who is the mysterious— but funny — Jokester? Oh, and Mister Mxyzptlk explains it all!
Plus, more DC villains origin back-up stories written by Scott Beatty, including Zod, Deadshot & Two-Face. The COUNTDOWN continues!

KIRK'S COMMENTS: This marks the last month of Countdown with it switching to Countdown to Final Crisis at the end of the month with issue #26. I think DC is hoping more people will jump on with the name change. Last issue's Crime Syndicate focus was pretty good and the first Countdown I've really enjoyed. Let's see if DC can keep up the pace and finish the first half strong.

COUNTDOWN PRESENTS THE SEARCH FOR RAY PALMER: CRIME SYNDICATE #1
Written by Sean McKeever
Art by Jamal Igle & Rob Hunter
Cover by Tony S. Daniel
Learn the origin of the newest Challenger from Beyond, from the world where the heroes are villains. But what does that make the bad guys? Can even the Challengers make things right?

KIRK'S COMMENTS: After butchering the Wildstorm characters last month, I'm curious to see how they handle the Crime Syndicate. With McKeever doing the writing on this one, I'm hopeful for a pretty decent read as he did a great job with it in this week's Countdown #31.

DETECTIVE COMICS #837
Written by Paul Dini
Art by Don Kramer & Wayne Faucher
Cover by Simone Bianchi
This special issue of DETECTIVE COMICS features two of Gotham’s recently reformed rogues: Harley Quinn and the Riddler! Readers who have enjoyed Harley’s role in COUNTDOWN will take special pleasure in this story as they learn how she became involved in the Amazonian Women’s Help Center.

KIRK'S COMMENTS: Maybe Dini can actually explain this whole Holly and Harley mess he set up in Countdown months ago with this issue of Detective.

THE ALL-NEW ATOM #16
Written by Roger Stern
Art by Mike Norton & Trevor Scott
Cover by Ladrönn
The mysteries of Ivy Town deepen as it appears Ray Palmer may have been more responsible for the bad than the good…and the new Atom is further disillusioned by his former mentor. Featuring guest writer Roger Stern!

KIRK'S COMMENTS:
All-New Atom is a great book and while I'm upset how they unceremoniously kicked the character out of Countdown, I'm kind of glad he is no longer attached to that train wreck either. This should be an entertaining issue; Looking forward to it.

JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #10
Written by Geoff Johns & Alex Ross
Art by Dale Eaglesham & Ruy Jose
Cover by Alex Ross
Variant cover by Eaglesham & Jose
Alex Ross joins Geoff Johns as co-writer for Part 1 of “Thy Kingdom Come,” the epic story years in the making, springing from KINGDOM COME! Not a hoax! Not a dream! Not an imaginary story! Welcome the newest member to the Justice Society of America: the Kingdom Come Superman! Coming from an Earth plagued by heroes-gone-extreme, how will this Superman react to an incarnation of the Justice Society he never knew? This Superman’s world needed better heroes.
So does ours.

KIRK'S COMMENTS:
Is it me or does Alex Ross have only 3 covers he can pick from - the hero standing looking down, group shot of heroes and heroes standing / flying in a line in a left-to-right pose? His work is excellent, but I'm getting bored with his covers. Despite the cover, this should be another great issue for the JSA.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #16
Written by Dave Gibbons
Art and cover by Pat Gleason & Prentis Rollins
“The Sinestro Corps War” continues as Mogo is attacked by the Sinestro Corps. Can the largest Green Lantern of all defend itself from a squadron of Sinestro Corps members?
On sale September 26 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US

KIRK'S COMMENTS: This was delayed from last week's shipment for some reason. I was upset at the time, but in the end, it might actually salvage what was looking like a relatively mediocre week for comics. I'm going to go out on a limb and say this will be the Book of the Week this week with little to no competition from the rest of the group.

KIRK'S PULL LIST FOR MARVEL COMICS FOR OCTOBER 3, 2007

IRON MAN: ENTER THE MANDARIN #2
COVER BY: ERIC CANETE
WRITER: JOE CASEY
PENCILS: ERIC CANETE

The first historic clash between Iron Man and his greatest nemesis continues! Untold secrets abound when the ultimate battle between technology and magic kicks into high gear, as Iron Man discovers this new terrorist threat is much more dangerous than even he realized. Plus, the Mandarin isn't the only enemy waiting to throw down with ol' Shellhead -- when the Scarecrow strikes! You want classic Iron Man...you got it!
32 PGS./Rated A …$2.99

KIRK'S COMMENTS: I'm loving the art style used in this book. The first issue wasn't the greatest, but it was enough to bring me back for more this month.

MS. MARVEL #20
COVER BY: GREG HORN
WRITER: BRIAN REED
PENCILS: GREG TOCCHINI

PUPPETS - PART 3 OF 3
Brian Reed (New Avengers Illuminati) and Aaron Lopresti (Incredible Hulk) bring the Puppet Master saga to an explosive conclusion! In the heart of South America, Ms. Marvel goes toe-to-toe with a giant as she tries to put an end to Puppet Master's final grab at glory – while facing the possibility of losing one of the people she cares most about in the world! Death, destruction and special guest star Stature of the Young Avengers, all in this issue!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99

KIRK'S COMMENTS: Aaron Stack from Nextwave is back again this month in Ms Marvel. That's pretty much the only reason you need to pick up this entertaining series. Come for the fleshlings, stay for the alcoholic robot.

OMEGA: THE UNKNOWN #1
COVER BY: FAREL DALRYMPLE
WRITER: JONATHAN LETHEM
KARL RUSNAK
PENCILS: FAREL DALRYMPLE
PAUL HORNSCHEMEIER

The story of a mute, reluctant superhero from another planet, and the earthly teenager with whom he shares a strange destiny -- and the legion of robots and nanoviruses that have been sent from afar to hunt the two of them down. Created in 1975 by Steve Gerber and Mary Skrenes, the original Omega The Unknown lasted only ten issues but was a legend to those who recall it -- an ahead-of-its-time tale of an anti-hero, inflected with brilliant ambiguity. One of Omega's teenage fans was award-winning novelist Jonathan Lethem, who has used the original as a springboard for a superbly strange, funny, and moving graphic novel in ten chapters.
32 PGS./Rated T+…$2.99

KIRK'S COMMENTS: Not sure what this book is all about. The description really grabbed me and basically was the only reason I added this to my pull list. Don't recognize any of the creators either, but I'll definitely be checking this out next week. I'll let you guys know how it is when I get it.

POWERS #26
COVER BY: MICHAEL AVON OEMING
WRITER: BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS
PENCILS: MICHAEL AVON OEMING

THE 25 COOLEST DEAD SUPERHEROES OF ALL TIME
Homicide detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim investigate murders specific to superhero cases, and they both have a secret: They both have powers. Witness the fallout of the worst moment in POWERS history as new detectives join the homicide department. Are Walker and Pilgrim still partners? And who is preying on the young powers of the city?
32 PGS./Explicit Content …$2.95

KIRK'S COMMENTS: Oh boy, I've been waiting for what seems like forever for the next Powers issue and it's finally here. #25 was awesome and next Wednesday can't come soon enough for me to get my grubby little paws on this one.

RUNAWAYS #28
COVER BY: JO CHEN
WRITER: JOSS WHEDON
PENCILS: MICHAEL RYAN

DEAD END KIDS
Super-star JOSS WHEDON (ASTONISHING X-MEN, Buffy) and rising star MICHAEL RYAN (NEW EXCALIBUR, NEW X-MEN) continue their landmark run. Pun intended. Love is in the air as the Runaways try and run back from 1907. Part 4 (of 6).
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99
KIRK'S COMMENTS: I honestly believe Whedon has killed my love of Runaways. He's had a few decent moments, like Molly punching Punisher in the stomach, but this entire arc is not what Runaways is all about. It's decent but I can't wait for a new team to take over this series.

UNCANNY X-MEN #491
COVER BY: SALVADOR LARROCA
WRITER: ED BRUBAKER
PENCILS: SALVADOR LARROCA

THE EXTREMISTS
This is it, the final showdown between the X-Men and the terrorist branch of the Morlocks. But how can they win with Warpath and Hepzibah captured and Storm buried under a ton of debris? The future is at stake and it all centers on Magneto. But what role will the former Master of Magnetism play? Part 5 (of 5)
Featuring Endangered Species Chapter 14 – Beast nearly sold his soul to science for a chance to cure the effects of M-Day. But when the rational arts fail him, he turns to the mystical arts and Doctor Strange!
40 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99

KIRK'S COMMENTS: Will Magneto finally show up? Will this arc actually accomplish anything? Does anyone care? Brubaker is just spinning his wheels in this rather lackluster Extremist arc. Love his work on Daredevil and Iron Fist, but this UXM run is a real dud for me. Hopefully next arc picks up the pace as they get ready for Messiah Complex.

*Note* Solicit information and covers from DC and Marvel respectively. This post does not contain all comics coming out next week, just the ones I intend on purchasing.
