Top 10 Tuesdays - 10 Handmade Comic Props

It’s October, and that means that Halloween is just around the corner and that means it’s time to get your costume ready! You could always go for some store mass-produced costume, but if you want something particularly unique, you can always head over to Etsy, which is a huge online marketplace for vintage and handmade goods.

You may remember that some time ago, Ryan made a list with the Top 10 Accessories from comics. This time we here at The Weekly Crisis went through some of the material found on Etsy and compiled a list of the Top 10 Handmade Props we found there. Expect to see some crossover between the two lists, so hit the jump to see more.

Sure, Scott Pilgrim might have bombed in the American box office, but the Ramona Flowers costume is already popular in the comic conventions. The handbag is the perfect way to tie the whole outfit together with style. That being said, if you are in the market for one of these babies, look around because there’s actually a whole lot of them, with different styles and qualities.

Are you bald or do you have a shaved head? Do you have a black coat? If so, you are halfway there to a Spider Jerusalem costume for this Halloween. All that you are missing is these fashionable glasses that he wore throughout Transmetropolitan (though you should note that these glasses will NOT record the awkward sex that you might have with your intern). Now all that you are missing is the body tattoos and attitude!

Fans of the Legion of Superheroes have plenty of choices for costumes, from all kinds of time periods. The whole unifying factor between all of them is their Legion Flight Ring. Even if it is in the wrong color (they are usually gold/yellow, right?), this one looks pretty good. It’s also subtle enough that you might wear it outside of costumed parties or Halloween, to show off your nerdiness anywhere you might go.

If you were buying comics at all during the past year, chances are that you already own a plastic ring with a Green Lantern logo on it. Of course, this one is not made out of plastic, but silver. It’s the same maker and quality as the previous item on the list.

This custom made Mjolnir will be a perfect addition to any Thor costume. The thing is actually made out of wood (painted to look like metal) so I am guessing it weighs quite a bit. Despite how much you want to scream “HAVE AT THEE, VILE ONES!” and swing this hammer around, you better keep it in your belt instead.

In terms of easiness, a costume of Death from the Endless is pretty high on the list. Just get some black clothes, thrown in a lot of eyeliner, and frizz up your hair, and you are pretty much done. That being said, if you don’t want people to think you went as Robert Smith from The Cure, you better grab one of these silver Ankh necklaces.

Sure, you can probably find a Rorschach mask in any costume store that you go to, and truth be told, they will probably look better than this one. That being said, this one has something that all the other ones don’t have: this mask actually moves! It’s true, you can see it in a video that the creator has uploaded to YouTube.

Alright, so maybe I am cheating on this one, because I don’t particularly remember the Riddler ever wearing something like this. Maybe Jim Carrey in that Batman film, but I’m not going to watch THAT again. It’s also a pretty accessible price and looks good in case you are desperate for costume ideas.

Look, you know that you can find a Wonder Woman costume pretty much anywhere, but if you want some Bracelets that could probably actually stop bullets (please don’t attempt at home!), you really can’t go wrong with these silver ones. Looking this good won’t come cheap though, as the price tag on this item borders on the four hundred dollar mark. Only for hardcore Wondey fans!

You might be growing your beard already in preparation for Halloween, and you have that leather jacket that looks just like Wolverine’s, but if you want the traditional costume look, these mask is pretty good looking. What I specially like is that it seems very rigid, so the pointy ends stay up throughout the whole party and/or convention.

Conclusion

There you have it, you are all set for Halloween and Con Season! Are you planning to dress up? You should try looking around the site. If you find any other good looking comic props and costumes on Etsy, let us know in the comment sections.

not totally unrelated to this....my 4 year old daughter is going to be Jesse from Toy Story 3 on Halloween.

The catch? She insists she needs a lightsaber to go on her belt. Has to be purple. She will confuse every house she goes to but dad is proud.
