Cover of the Week - Avengers Academy & Secret Avengers

Welcome to another Sunday edition of Cover of the Week, as every week we choose the best covers to graze the stands. Today, Ryan L. and me pick our favorites as two outside figures enter a team book and lay them to waste. Hit the jump to see the winning covers.

Ryan L.'s Cover of the Week - Secret Avengers #5 by Marko Djurdjevic

Ryan L.: I'll take this up against any other cover this week, or any other week. It might not be the 'best' cover ever created, but it's going down as an all-time favourite for me. The centrality of Nick Fury is great because he's the guy you need, the guy to save us all, but then you notice his different outfit (a design I really like that makes me think equal doses of Iron Fist enrolled at Cobra Kai) and the look on his face. It's only after you notice the difference that you really take in the poles behind him. He's taking out these Secret Avengers and leaving them as a warning to others. You don't mess with Nick Fury, even if he isn't Nick Fury. I think an ersatz Fury would take out that damn Samuel L Jackson one any day!

Matt's Cover of the Week - Avengers Academy #4 by Mike McKone

Matt: This is a pretty great cover and I know it's a busy design, but purposefully so. Juggernaut is literally crashing through the cover of this comic book, and taking all the students with him. The facial expressions are great, but my favorite detail is that Veil has completely disappeared, just leaving parts of her costume behind.

Runner-Ups: Hulk #25, Justice League: Generation Lost #10, Supergirl #56

That Generation Lost cover is incredible. I'd love to have it as a poster in my room ...

... if I was young enough to have posters of super heros in my room ...

What's the cut off age for having superhero posters in your room?

I assume it's a stack better if it's original art instead...right?

@Ryan - original art is an entirely different story! :-)

Great Supergirl cover. The Yin-Yang thing may be a tad clichéd, but in this case it fits perfectly.

Astonishing X-Men: Xenogenesis #3 trumps all, with all its nonsense and fetishes. I'm sad to see it wasn't even a runner-up.
