A lot of people were upset when Peter Parker lost his job after doctoring photographs in an attempt to exonerate J. Jonah Jameson. The writer of that particularly arc on Amazing Spider-Man was Mark Waid. In an interview with CBR today, he spoke out about writing that particular story and apologized to fans for it. He states his case and what he was attempting to do with the story and thinks it could have been handled better, but still apologizes for it.
I don't know about you, but that means a lot to me as a life long fan of Spider-Man and Mark Waid. This is how you handle stories that were negatively received by fans and critics alike. You don't back peddle or push forward relentlessly or talk down to fans - you man up and admit you made a mistake. Now, if only DC or several of their writers/editors could take some notes from this...

This is about the last thing I've ever expected from a writer who did something that fans hated. Seriously. But it is nice to see writers that don't put themselves on a pedestal and think whatever they do is perfect and if fans don't like it they are stupid for it. It would be great if Quesada could be a man like this over Sins Past and OMD, but oh well, major respect for Mark Waid.

I recommend reading the interview (its about half way through if you just want the part where Waid discusses this). He's not just bowing down to fans whims. He still supports his opinion and explains what he attempted to do, yet still apologizes. Was really classy and lots of respect from me for it.
mark waid really knows how to handle mistakes, unlike other writers who try to sweep them under the rug. I remember reading about him regretting apologizing for killing Ice in Justice League.
This is why he's one of my favorite writers... People forget but Waid also did the same thing when he "left" (more like was forced off of) X-Men. He didn't apologize for the direction he was taking the team, but he did feel sorry that X-Fans wouldn't see his idea...
We finally did with his JLA "Tower of Babel" story. Waid has always been a straight shooter with the fans... Legion of SuperHeroes fans can attest to that.He always tries to answer our questions.

I am glad to see Waid admit that what he did in that ASM story did not go over well with fans. It takes a lot for him to say that and shows that he does pay attention to criticism, good or bad. I wish more writers, artist, editors, and the rest working in the comic book industry would take Waid's example as fans are much more forgiving if someone man's up and admits when they did something wrong or that did go over well with fans. Very classy move by Waid and a reason why I have always like Waid.
I am sad that we won't be seeing Waid, Kelly, and FVL writing Spider-Man because they were my favorite writers on ASM. The stories they did were almost always great.
I have endless respect for Waid. Not just because he acknowledges and apologises for how poorly his plot came off, but for him having the cajones to say that the idea itself was more than sound. which it was. he's apologising for how poorly the execution went, and when it comes down to it that's what a comic writer needs to be aware of.
What was mishandled in the story? Did I miss something? I thought it was great. Real Life is full of ups and downs and decisions made on good intentions that can backfire on you. I thought it was a very poignant story that can be related to real life. Does everyone want his life to be plain and simple. I thought it added a layer of complexity that makes you treat situations with more thought going into the actions of those choices. It was received poorly because the way it was told was ridiculously ham-fisted and didn't fit Parker's character in the way it was approached. the idea was more than sound but characterisation and scripting hit the shitter in the execution
waid also wrote the drunk Parker scene in #601. He should apologise for that too.
