It's a tough world out there and you have to plan ahead. That's why all the good comic publishers tell us exactly what they plan on doing months in advance. That way we can put our orders in to show support, or we can get a spoiler from a blurb and paste it all over the 'net, or we can just discus what's going on, which is the option that we here at The Weekly Crisis wholly endorse. We each choose a few items that interest us, in good or bad ways, and we let you, the ever-lovin' public, know all about it. What we discuss isn't an exact guaranteed "future pull list" it's just what caught our eye and we thought we'd share it with you.
Ex Machina #50
Action Comics #891
Now this is tempting! Paul Cornell, as you all should know by now, is all kinds of awesome. While I would love to see him do more Marvel work, the premise of Action Comics being about Lex Luthor as written by him sounds interesting, and full with possibilities (the orange ring is just a bonus in this case). Pete Woods is a name I am familiar with, but I can't think off the top of my head what his art looks like, or if I like it or not.
I'm seriously considering adding this into my pull list, but the Superman family of titles have been having way too many crossovers lately. I don't see any triangle numberings in these things, so it may be safe to jump back into the pool now? With this and JMS taking over the Superman title, maybe DC is finally putting an end to all those endless events and shake-ups in the franchise. What do you guys think?
(P.S. I still don't like these ugly David Finch covers that DC insists on putting in every series)
This is the beginning of the One Moment in Time storyline where readers will finally see what really happened in the Peter/MJ wedding because of One More Day. I know some people want to know exactly what happened, but I'm certainly not one of them. One More Day was what caused me to stop buying the Spider-Man comics, and despite what your opinion of what Brand New Day and it's aftermath was like (there's mixed opinions), most people agree that One More Day was like pulling a band aid, or setting a bone, it was painful but a "necessary" step. Going back to revisit it sounds like putting the band aid back on, except this time it also has super glue in it.
Avengers: The Children's Crusade #1
The original creators of the Young Avengers are supposed to make a glorious come back in this maxi-series, that will also reintroduce the Scarlet Witch into the Marvel Universe. This has a lot of potential, but the bi-monthly schedule may be a real momentum killer for a book of this nature. Both creators are not exactly known for their prolific output, but with all the time that fans waited for this series to start, I figure they could have waited six more months and have the whole thing done and coming out monthly. That being said, I am excited for this, as the original Young Avengers series was great.
Death of Dracula #1
In theory, this sounds like a very interesting and potentially awesome idea, the solicit alone sounds chock full of crazy ideas, but there's a couple of things working against it. First of all, it's hard to do a vampire story after the critically acclaimed, and pretty much "end-all be-all" if you ask me, Vampire State story line in Captain Britain & MI 13. Secondly, this is supposed to be the start of an X-Men event, though there's no mention of that anywhere in the title or in the solicitations. And finally, it is written by Victor Gischler, who has yet to impress me with any of his writing, though his capacity to keep getting new series approved is astonishing.
X-Files/30 Days of Night #1
And filling in this month's role of "Unlikely Crossovers" we have this book, that probably no one demanded. Considering that both franchises are past their prime, this could be potentially horrendous. Was Steve Niles or Adam Jones ever involved with the writing of the X-Files show? Tom Mandrake is an inspired choice, I could see him drawing some scary vampires, though he is pretty much known for his superhero work (namely, the Spectre) so I don't know how effectively he'll capture the mood a book like this need. Anyway, this will probably do pretty good in trades and horrible in the direct market.
Those are some of the books that caught our eyes. Which books are you looking forward to in July? Which part of these solicits made you roll your eyes? Let us know in the comments section!

The most exciting things about July are Cornell on Action Comics and JMS starting on Superman. I predict good things ahead for Superman.
"most people agree that One More Day was like pulling a band aid, or setting a bone, it was painful but a 'necessary' step"
I have to say this isn't the impression I've gotten at all. In fact, I believe this is the first time I've heard this particular view of it expressed. I'd even say that this opinion is belied by the substantially contracted readership of ASM since One More Day happened.
I'm waiting for the day that Quesada leaves and the next issue of ASM ends with Bob Newhart waking up and realizing OMD/BND was all just a dream.
@Klep: You would not find a more staunch anti-OMD reader than me, I dropped all the Spidey books since then, and I haven't looked back. That being said, I've read from a lot of people that enjoyed everything that came after it, and that do indeed see OMD as "destroying the foundation" to put up a new building. I will concede that it may not be a majority of the people (and that I probably should have phrased it different), but it is a point of view that I have seen many times.
my GOD I hate victor gischler's writing. Him even touching X-Man and Jubilee fills me with fear. But then he's only done deadpool material for Marvel so who knows he might improve in time for this.
Also an event where Moon Knight is involved?! This is what we call FREAKIN' AWESOME
Definitely can't wait for Paul Cornell on Action Comics. I'll be great to see what he does with Lex Luthor.
I might check out Shadowland and Avengers: Children's Crusade. I don't know if I'm really a big fan of the Young Avengers.
I'll be interesting to see what will happen with the next part of the Spider-Man story.
I can't wait to read Shadowland, I just hope it doesn't end with a return to status quo, I like the way Daredevil has been handled since a few years ago and him leading The Hand is a great idea.
I will read OMIT just because I would like to rip that band-aid off my skin, once and for all since I actually like some of the material that came after OMD; the thing that worries me is that Quesada is writing and I would've preferred an actual writer working on this.
@Radlum I think Shadowland will be great, and I don't think things will get back to normal (whatever that is) very soon after that, which is fine, but I'm curious about how you define the status quo for the Daredevil title.
I kind of have a broad definition of it as Matt having some kind of professional/"normal" life in between the nightly activities and there has certainly been some of that in the last few years. I actually see that particular status quo as underused - or maybe I should say underexplored. I love the crazy stuff too, but writers shouldn't feel like they have to bend over backwards to write a good Daredevil story with the basic concept of the character being as strong as it is.
Okay, a little off-topic, sorry everyone who doesn't read Daredevil!
Cheung!!!
Shadowland is starting to remind me of Wolverine's Enemy of the State combined with Zero Hour...I am going to be intrigued how Marvel will pull that off...
Heinberg!!!
I have high hopes for Cornell on Superman but I know he's going to get hate from some of the hardcore Supes fans....he'll win them over though..
Young Avengers!!!
X-Files/30 Days of Night should not get me excited but I have a feeling it will surprise us all as a dark horse hit...(no pun intended of course!)
Can you tell I am going to enjoy the heck out of Avengers Crusade? =)
I'm not at all a Superman fan, but I really like Paul Cornell, so I'll probably pick up Action anyway.
I really can't even imagine how they're going to tie everything in Ex Machina up in two issues. Very happy that #50's FINALLY been solicited, but I'm sad it's ending.
I would like to submit, for the record, that Quesada wrote Daredevil: Father and I really dug that series quite a bit. I reread it a lot out of the DD tomes I own.
Other than that, yes, Shadowland is something to at least be excited about. Will it be perfect? We'll have to wait to find out, but for now, it's good to be a DD fan!
How come Billy Tan's poster is pretty and Finch's covers are ugly? Just asking, I myself don't think their work is that different.
@Ivan - I think the key difference is that Tan has more than 2-3 faces in his drawing repertoire. Just started reading through Bendis' New Avengers run and was surprised to see that most of Finch's faces in the initial arc look just like the faces I've seen on his DC covers.
Interested to see how the Hand doesn't just crap their pants and run when Iron Fist shows up. The man has taken down an atomic train for pete's sake! Just not a fair contest when you think about it.
Hm. Now that you menton it, I guess that's true. But it's not like he's Ed Benes...
Shadowland looks interesting, but the last Daredevil stuff I read was the Kevin Smith run.
I have seen some improvement on Tan's work, though it is true that he suffers from some of the same problems as Finch: hiding the feet, over muscular bodies, everyone is always flexing etc.
My problem with Finch is that the man draws only one, maybe two faces. AND THEY ARE ALWAYS GRIMACING >:[
I don't get you, Matt. You said you stopped buying Amazing Spider-man BECAUSE of One More Day, but you still think it was a NECESSARY step?
And then I go ahead and read the comments. To be honest, the only thing I've liked out of Brand New Day is the introduction of Mr. Negative and Anti-Venom, New Ways to Die, and American Son. That doesn't take away from the fact that I still think Peter Parker should be a married man. And what kind of "hero" makes a pact with the devil to undo his marriage with a super model wife to save his aunt who is forever an inch from death! OK, enough ranting.
