The clashing of comics with other cultures happens in all kind of fields, and while mixing comic books with culinary arts is not exactly new (I'm sure we have all had a comic book themed cake at one point), the rising profile of comic book creations in other media (particularly movies), means more and more comic book cakes. Take the two examples above, a
Batman and
Superman logo cakes by DeviantArt user
Cakerific, which look like they are made out of plastic because of how carefully they are crafted. While those are just logos, hit the jump to see some others incredibly well done, sometimes complex and always awesome nerd cakes.
It can't be stopped. It's a self-sustaining cake now!
Like I said above, many of the comic book related cakes are actually based on what people see in the movies. This is a perfect example, as
Lieju does a gingerbread replica of
Doctor Octopus' fusion reactor from
Spider-Man 2.I don't know why, but the lollipop in the middle cracks me up.
Possibly delicious? Must investigate further.
Watchmen has also turned into a very popular franchise since the movie, and while some people did not like it, if it has given us a
Rorschach cake, I'd say it did it's job properly. This one is done by
MissMovies779, who does seem to have done any other cakes, but I'd say if someone is up to the task a cake with Doctor Manhattan's logo should be pretty easy to do too.
Quick Robin, to the Batcake!
Batman Begins and
The Dark Knight put the caped crusader back into the spotlight, and I'm sure many kids are going to wish they had a cake as awesome as this one at their next birthday party. This one is done by
Naera, who is a professional cake artist and has done many other if you check her profile.
Both characters once were part of the Weapon Cake program.
While I'm sure
Wolverine having his own movie made him a pretty popular choice, but it is interesting that in this rendition, once again by
Cakerific, both Wolverine and
Sabertooth are sporting their comic book outfits. As you can see, the base of the cake is the X logo from the
X-Men.
The thing is, some people want to have their cake and eat it too, so they can't settle for just one franchise or character in their cake, they want to have several! Take a look at the following examples...
Cake Marvel vs. Cake DC
Just take a look at this one! Not one, not two, but three different logos of three different superheroes in one single cake! Three layers of delicious superhero cake goodness, as served by DA user
see-through-silence. I'm not sure if it's just the perspective, but the Superman portion looks about the size of a pillow.
I don't think those copies are Near-Mint anymore.
Out of all the cakes I have posted so far, this is the one that actually uses comic book art as part of the design. The images around the layers are actually covers from comic books, from Batman and Amazing Spider-Man titles to be specific. Sadly, I did not save which user created this, so if you are reading this and would like to be credited, let me know in the comment section.
HULK SMASH PUNY CAKES!
And then we have something like this, with
Hulk's fist crashing through the table, holding three bat-a-rangs while the spider from Spider-Man is about to bite! This birthday cake by
KuroRaikou is pretty much the holy grail of nerdiness, combining three different franchises into a very unique looking cake that is bound to also be a nice conversational piece until you cut it.
Bonus round! While the following ones are not technically from comics, they are based on Transformers (sure, they have had comics too, but the cakes are based strictly on the movies), they are so great that I couldn't NOT post them.
Please don't eat poor Bumblebee!
I have to admit, this
Bumblebee cake is slightly disturbing. The crazy eyes are probably going to haunt my dreams, but the details on this cake are crazy! I can't imagine how many hours it took
Cakerific to put this thing together, and I would have cried when it came the time to cut and serve it.
Cake is the right of all sentient beings!
Yes, that is a giant cake in the shape of
Optimus Prime you are looking at. I believe the word you are looking for is "EPIC WIN". I have no idea what the size of this thing was, but considering it was a wedding cake, It must have been at least a foot tall. I don't know about you, but my wedding would have been 1000% more awesome if we had gotten a cake like this monstrosity. I really am in awe at just how cool looking this thing is, and it was once again created by
Cakerific.
Conclusion
I hope you all enjoyed a quick look at the culture clash of comics and culinary art. I know it's hard to follow up to the awesomeness that is Optimus Cake, but once you are done picking up your jaw off the floor, how about telling us which one was your favorite nerd cake? When you were a child, were any of your birthday cakes comic book or nerd-themed? Let us know in the comment section!

A year ago, I got a surprise birthday party and when they brought out the cake it had two Batman symbols, a small Batman bust and "RAAAAACHEEEEL!!!" written on the cake. It was quite awesome.
Seriously..I am now geeked out AND hungry...this is bad at 7:12 in the morning....
You guys are evil!
@Anonymous: Haha, wow, that sounds pretty funny. Did you get any pictures before you cut it up?
The Bumblebee cake scares me.
That Wolvie V Sabretooth cake is insane, what do you even made those little dudes with, pure findant? Probably.
No Daredevil, though, how sad. But my wife is a wicked little cake maker, I'll start telling her what our son-to-be likes.
@Matt: Unfortunately not. No one managed to remember to bring a camera.
I made a batman cake last year, but since the icing never turned out to be dark blue..it looked like The Tick, rather than batman...
@Ryan: I don't think Wolvie and Sabretooth are edible, they are probably there just for decoration.
I had a My Little Pony cake but I'd like to state for the record that I asked for Voltron
This is a cool cake with the joker on it...

Coolest cake ever?
Was a two foot tall toilet, complete with yellow jello and a few O'Henry bars in the bowl...
Yeah, we didn't really eat that one lol.
Well, that certainly sounds creative...
