I'm a sucker for Incognito. It's that simple I loved the title and miss it so sorely now it's all over and the fun has passed. But then Ed Brubaker promised it would be back, and Sean Phillips may have taken a gig drawing a Dark Tower title for Marvel but now he's showing some commitment to coming back as he shows us his first cover for the return to Incognito, Bad Influence.
For those who don't know, Incognito was a six issue mini series released last year by writer Ed Brubaker, artist Sean Phillips, colourist Val Staples, and the Icon imprint at Marvel. There were also back matter essays by Jess Nevins about various pulp characters from back in the day.
The story was a hyper-saturated neon-noir tale of a supervillain in the witness protection relocation program. He had ratted out his former outfit and then lived the life of a schlub forever more with no powers. Until he figures out how to get his powers back. Then he has to either go back to his old ways, and most likely get pinned pretty easily for the style of crime and vicinity to him, or he can try something new. He can do good in this world. In the end, all he wants is to feel bigger and better than the average man. But then his old crew come a-calling.
I hope, I truly do, that this sequel manages to match the original, if not top it. Marvel seem to have a good track record with their movie sequels (X2, Spider-Man 2, Iron Man 2) so I'm hoping that this formula, of sorts, will prove true here as well. I'm intrigued by the cover below and can only sit and wait for the actual solicitation.
Incognito is a brilliant tale, and currently under consideration for an Eisner award. Everything in the comic resonated with me and I thought it was perfect for what it was. An easy addition to my top ten comics of all time. I know some will agree with me, and surely some won't just as easily, but to each our own. I only hope that if you haven't checked out the title before try to do so now, and then come August we should see some mention of this title, or one like it as Phillips may want to fine tune it, hitting our stands.

I know it probably doesn't make much sense to group Incognito with Criminal or Sleeper but in my mind they all have very similar flavors to each other and they are among my favorite reads of all time.
I simply can't wait for this next installment of Incognito.
I know noir isn't everyone's cup of tea but for those that like this kind of stuff you understand what makes the stories so awesome.
Not sure why it wouldn't make sense to group this with Criminal and Sleeper. Criminal was straight-up crime noir. Sleeper was espionage/crime noir with super-powered characters. Incognito is crime noir with super-powered characters. They are all very much thematically connected. If they were novels they would be grouped as a series in the body of the authors work.
